Granola Stuffed Baked Apples a Healthy and Delicious Fall Dessert You’ll Love

Enjoy a delicious fall treat with our Granola Stuffed Baked Apples recipe! Filled with granola, spices, and honey, this easy dessert is healthy, flavorful, and perfect for the season.

When fall arrives here in the United States, many of us envision the bounty of fall fruits and vegetables.

Top among these are apples. Visiting an apple orchard can be a fun time for the family while getting you the freshest fruit possible – fresh from the tree!

The deep south doesn’t have the apple orchards found in other parts of the country (like the Northeast where we used to live.)

However, we do enjoy having apple cider and apple desserts throughout the season. We just buy it all from the store.

There is something special about the blending of apples with cinnamon than evokes the comfy feeling associated with fall.

Baked apples filled with granola served in a bowl with scoops of vanilla ice cream. A spoon rests on one apple, and a jar of granola and honey dipper are nearby.

By blending oats, nuts, and aromatic spices, this recipe transforms the classic apple into a flavorful, fall-inspired dish. It’s easily adaptable to suit different diets and tastes.

Whether paired with yogurt or enjoyed by itself, these granola-stuffed baked apples are a tasty way to welcome autumn.

Tips for Making Granola Topped Baked Apples

Choose a granola that will pair nicely with apples. A basic honey based granola is good, but you can also use ones that incorporate nut butters.

A jar of granola spills onto a wooden surface, surrounded by apples, a bowl of cinnamon, a cinnamon stick, nuts, and honey.

If you want to keep it gluten free, read the label carefully or make your own using gluten free certified oats. My personal favorite is One Degree Gluten Free Sprouted Rolled Oats. A five pound bag last me a while.

While the recipe calls for chopped nuts, you can easily make it without them. As a mom to someone with multiple nut allergies, we’ll be skipping the nuts or baking his separate from ours.

Apples That Work Best When Baked

When it comes to baking, not all apples are created equal!

Granny Smith apples are a top choice because their firm texture holds up well under heat, and their tartness provides a nice balance to sweet baked goods.

Honeycrisp apples are another favorite, known for their crisp texture and naturally sweet flavor, making them a great option for pies or crisps.

Lastly, consider using Braeburn apples, which have a perfect blend of sweetness and acidity, and hold their shape beautifully when baked.

Ingredients

  • 4 small to medium baking apples, tops cut off and reserved, apples cored and hollowed out to make room for the granola.
  • 5 Tbsp granola (use more if necessary based on size of apple)
  • 2 Tbsp raisins plus dried fruit as desired (See notes)
  • 2 Tbsp nuts, chopped, optional
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 4 tsp unsalted butter
  • Drizzle of honey, optional
  • Optional: Crème fraiche or ice cream for serving

Instructions

    1. Start by preheating your oven to 375°F (190°C).

    2. In a mixing bowl, combine your choice of granola, raisins, nuts, and dried fruit. Sprinkle in some cinnamon for flavor, and if you want a touch of sweetness, drizzle in a little honey.

    3. Take your cored apples and arrange them in a baking dish that can withstand the oven's heat.

    4. Generously fill each apple with the granola mixture you've prepared.

    5. For added richness, place a teaspoon of butter on top of each stuffed apple.

    6. Bake the apples in the preheated oven for 30 to 40 minutes, or until they become tender and sticky.

    7. Once done, remove the baking dish from the oven and let the apples cool for a few minutes.

    8. Serve your delicious baked apples as they are, or elevate the dish with a scoop of ice cream or a dollop of crème fraîche.

    Enjoy this delightful treat!

Notes

You can enhance your granola by incorporating extra dried fruits or nuts based on your preference. Consider adding tasty options like dried cranberries, apricots, figs, mangoes, or prunes. For a balanced flavor and texture, it's a good idea to chop the dried fruits into pieces that match the size of your raisins.

If you’re using unsweetened granola, a drizzle of honey can provide a lovely touch of sweetness, if that's what you’re looking for!
