Adapted from the novel by Jack London, it vividly brings to the screen the story of Buck, a big-hearted dog whose blissful domestic life is turned upside down when he is suddenly uprooted from his California home and transplanted to the exotic wilds of the Canadian Yukon during the Gold Rush of the 1890s.

More Ways to Expand Learning with The Call of the Wild

First off, if you have not read the book…get a copy and do so. The shopping link below takes you to the paperback copy of the original text on Amazon. You can get it on Kindle for less or in hardback for more.

My favorite discussion to have with the boys is how a book and the movie based on it differ.

This Disney movie is an adaptation of the novel, but not a verbatium production.

Did you know there are multiple movie adaptations of the book?

The 1972 version starred movie great Charlton Heston.
In 2012,  a version with Christopher Lloyd was released. It is not as highly regarded though.

Plus, there is a mini-series for TV version as well.

If your child really likes comparisions, add in one of the other movie versions to see how each approached the overall story.

And see if they prefer using their imagination while reading compared to seeing it on the screen.

You can find a ready to use study of the novel on EdHelper. It is for grades 6 through 9, although you can modify up or down.

Learn More About Alaska

Our family is fortunate to have lived in Alaska for several years.

We’ve learned about sled dogs and seen them in action.
