Visiting the Traveling LEGO Exhibit at the Anchorage Museum

Last in the fall, the Anchorage Museum had a traveling exhibit open up that had kids around the area clambering to visit. LEGOs seem to have that effect on people of all ages. So, before it was packed up for good, I took out a membership for the family and brought the boys to the traveling LEGO exhibit. They enjoyed it enough that we went back a second time with the rest of the family on the last day of the exhibit.
When you walked into the space, the first spot to get the boys’ attention was the enclosed display of LEGO minifigures. D had me taking photos of the entire line up as they were already making a mental wish list of ones they’d like to buy.
From the space, there was a history of interactive toys (including LEGOs) which then moved into a display of photography capturing LEGOs ‘in action’ shots. The artist really favored sports and Star Wars ideas which caught a few of my boys eyes.
Then you moved through a space with artwork (paintings) with LEGO “figures” incorporated into the art. The actual LEGO creations were featured in the space as well. While it was fun to see, it wasn’t enough to hold the attention of my family members.
Another section of the exhibit featured some interesting LEGO creations by an artist, including a life sized LEGO person (him!) This was a bit more interesting as you can see how challenging it would be to make the different pieces.
Walking towards the hands on sections of the exhibit, you passed through an area of LEGO creations in glass cases. Some of these were done by kids and would mention the age of the builder. A few, such as the Titanic, were rather impressive.
They younger boys did enjoy the hands on section where tables had LEGOs sorted by color for building with books for ideas near by.
Overall, it was a fun exhibit to visit although the day I took the entire family was quite crowded and the interactive aspect had no open spots to play. Had it not been included in the cost of a regular admission (or in our case part of our membership), I might have been a little let down by it. But, it sure is sparking some creative juices in kids around south central Alaska when it comes to building with LEGOs.

Are LEGOS bountiful in your house?
Do the kids just build according to a prescribed plan or do they mix and match sets to get more creative?
I had a chance to visit the LEGO exhibit when it came to NYC, but we didn’t make the 4 hour ride to catch it. I actually won 4 tickets to go. I am so disappointed because I think that it would have been a really fun experience. The Wall of LEGOS is too cool, as well as the artists self-LEGO figure.
wow this lego exhibit is so cool!! i hope to see thsi some day. legos do have that effect on us bc it’s so nostalgic. i used to love playing with them as a kid.. and i feel like as time went on.. they got fancier and fancier.. and the price has definitely skyrocketed too. 😛 wish i kept my old legos.
How cool! My son would go bonkers if we took him to a place like this! He would probably have a fit though because he would definitely want to play with them! Lol.
I love legos! When my kid grew older and I had to donate some of her toys, it was only a few things and definitely all of her Lego stuff I kept (for me!). I still have a large rolling box of legos in our guest room. It’s a fab stress reliever and great entertainment for kids visiting our home. I definitely need to see the exhibit you went to! I am a big fan of legos, I think it’s super cool to visit places like this. I wish I had the patience to build sweet things like these from legos. I can do houses, anything more than that. But it would be cool to at least try.
I seriously love Lego’s. They are so much fun!!! Now I have an idea to maybe stay up and set my sons up so he can play with them in the AM. I love the joy they bring to kids! I swear despite the painful feeling they give when you step on them, i will deal with that just to see my little dude smile! I would love to take him to visit one day!!! Thank you for sharing!
The kids are going to be so gaga over these Lego creations! I remember I used to be crazy for Lego too! I build houses, farms, resorts, malls with my Lego collection. Ah, childhood memories are the best!
I would love to see the traveling LEGO exhibit. The Titanic really is amazing! I am sorry that your kiddos didn’t get to take part in the hands-on part as that would have been so much fun!
I cannot even imagine how long it took that artist to make a life-size version of himself! Wow. I’m glad your family was able to enjoy some aspects of the display, but like you, had I paid, I would not have been too happy if my kids didn’t get to take part in the hands-on part. I’m sure that’s what they were looking forward to most, my daughter’s not even into Legos and I imagine she’d still love that section lol! Can you imagine what it must take for whoever transports these pieces to get them from location to location? I definitely would not want that job!
I cannot even believe the amount of talent some people possess! The time and detail it takes to create something like those statues is unbelievable! For a mom with 4 boys, the Lego museum was probably the best date in the world for you all! Cool find!
I’ve said it before, so I’ll say it again on your blog (which is great by the way!) I have NO idea how people started making lego statues, or even how they do it. Some of the stuff is just so unreal – and huge and bigger than lifesize! I wish my nephews lived around me (they’re a ten hour flight away), I know they’d love stuff like this.
