Ice Sculptures in Progress Anchorage Alaska 2015

Until January arrived, this winter had been rather mild for south central Alaska. So much so that traditional outdoor activities such as skiing and sledding were not feasible. On a cold January day, we popped over to watch artists in the process of creating ice sculptures in Anchorage which would be lit up for display in a downtown park.
Enjoy taking a look at some finished and some not quite so finished ice sculptures. I’ve put all of the photos into a short video and am highlighting just a few in the post.
I have a big admiration for the artists spending entire days out in the cold to bring their forms to life from blocks of ice. We were glad to be walking towards warmness and the promise of a yummy lunch.

Ever try your hand at ice sculpting?
Being able to make ice sculptures is a great talent. The first time I saw an ice sculpture was when I was at a wedding. I remember standing with a lemonade in my hand and looking at it. There was a lot of detail to the sculpture. It was breath taking. I wish I was able to make art in a large ice block.
These are fabulous! I love learning about how people live & play in other parts of the country and I have always wanted to visit Alaska! My brother lived there for awhile and loved it-I can’t wait to visit myself. Thanks for the inside look!
Those are really amazing! i really love the mural on the wall of the building across the street too. i can’t tolerate cold weather at all and probably wouldn’t last very long walking around looking at the sculptures, but i do enjoy seeing them in pictures from my very warm house. 😉 Thank you so much for sharing.
