This summer we made two visits there. The first was on the way back home after going to Seward for a day. The second was while Mr. O’s sister and her family came to visit.
The weather was okay that day early this summer, but it didn’t hold a candle to the July day we spent with our visitors.
Alaska Wildlife Refuge in Portage
Some of the animals were practically putting on a show this time which allowed for a few close-up shots. You’d think they were wanting to be scratched behind the ears like your favorite puppy dog.
Everyone enjoyed seeing the brown bear (aka Grizzly bear) up close.
I was really glad they were behind a fence. This one got rather interested in my youngest who was in a stroller.
What we did get for pictures on the first trip were a few of the bison.
They have a large herd there with the plan to release into the wild in 2013.
While the center can be walked for viewing, the new larger area for the bison is far enough back that we really need to drive or it’d take a long time with J.
That day also had the coyote peeking out for us to see.
Does your family enjoy visiting centers like the Alaska Wildlife Refuge?
What animals have you or your child most enjoyed seeing up-close?
