Reading Comics to Develop Character: Captain Absolutely

I have been, or can be if you click on a link and make a purchase, compensated via a cash payment, gift, or something else of value for writing this post. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.

Reading Comics to Develop Character, was made possible with a copy Captain Absolutely from Focus On The Family for review as part of the Homeschool Review Crew.

One aspect of life with boys is their near obsession with superheroes.

Good thing for them, this mama likes them as well.

However, not all ‘superheroes’ are going to help them develop the type of character desired by a Christian parent. Some of the mainstream ones have less than stellar lifestyles when it comes to temptations of the world. They might be defending others, but choices they make do not mesh with a Christian lifestyle.

Develop Character Through Entertainment

Whether you seek to have a child develop character through entertainment sources or not, it happens. What goes into their young minds has an effect.

This is why so many parents take an active role in determining what their child is going to watch on TV or in the movies. Yet, books are sometimes overlooked.

I know that my boys occasionally picked up a title at the library which ended up being a poor choice from this mama’s point of view. But, I recognize that it is near impossible to pre-read everything they want to read. So, finding sources that are going to support the values you want to instill is important as a parent.

Focus on the Family is one such source.

One of the cornerstones for Focus on the Family is to help parents raise their children with the morals and values of Christianity. Their resources reflect that goal and always keep an eye on being grounded in biblical principles.

About Captain Absolutely

 Captain Absolutely
The tagline for this comic book is “Defending Truth, Justice, and Lots More Truuuth!” After reading that, you can guess that this superhero is going to have a focus similar to many heroes.
Aside from the style of drawing and dialog being similar to other comics, Captain Absolutely also has his ‘roots’ in an accident. In his case, a ‘mysterious radioactive fumes’ from a computer explosion in the library leads to his transformation.

However, the difference is where Captain Absolutely gets the Truth he seeks to defend.

His source is the Bible. The Living Word of God which instructs us in all aspects of our life.

Like all good superhero stories, Captain Absolutely has a nemesis he battles… Dr. Relative!

Our Thoughts on Captain Absolutely

My younger boys took turns looking through the book. Our family has many fond memories of the Adventures in Odyssey series from which this comic has its roots. So, I expected them to like this latest adventure as well.

Captain Absolutely has the super hero fun feel with Christian values

My 8th-grade son read through it quickly and said it was a good read. He is my heaviest comic reader of all the boys.

My 1st-grade son is definitely into the theme of superheroes. And, he is at an age where I am more concerned about the wrong values being given in his reading. Plus, he is really into anything connected to the Bible and our faith.

So far, my youngest son and I are enjoying the book.  We’ve been reading it more slowly as I keep asking him to read aloud to me. I suspect when we are done it will be pulled out by him to be read several more times.
