We’ve been learning more about an American hero from the past by reading Heroes of History- Davy Crockett from the Heroes of History series of books by YWAM Publishing. We are also using a Study Guide to go along with our book as part of the Homeschool Review Crew.
History is a subject that can be approached in a variety of ways. You can grab a school text which focuses upon dates and events with such short glimpses at the people you leave with little flavor. That was my experience in school and it made history a bit boring.
Alternatively, you can incorporate more in-depth studies of people from different time periods and then add things like geography and historical events for their lifetime.
This alternative method is one that resonates so much better in our house. Using a biography from the Heroes of History line is a great way to do it.
About Heroes of History Davy Crockett
Like other titles in the Heroes of History product line, this title takes you on a journey alongside Davy Crockett through its narrative format. This biography line incorporates related history, geography, government, and science topics in a way that engages your family members and creates a more lasting impression of the person.
Davy Crockett is a well known American legend. Growing up in Greene County, Tennessee, Davy received his education through hard work first supporting his family’s needs and then for others.
For Davy, there was a call to adventure. Specifically, he felt called to go west to the untamed wilderness where wild animals and raging rivers abounded.
Along the way, you learn not only about his education on life through hard labor, but also his time as a United States Congressman and ultimately his role in defending the Alamo in Texas which led to his death.
This title was sent to us in print format. You can also purchase the title in audiobook format or as an ebook via links on the product page.
Incorporating Heroes of History Davy Crockett in Our Homeschool Days
For this review, we are reading a chapter per week taking time to look a little bit more at what is covered. Doing this as a read aloud also adds a bit of time compared to having my son read independently. Although he did read the first chapter on his own when the book arrived, it became apparent that he was not retaining key points or understanding unfamiliar vocabulary.
He has adored having this precious one-on-one time with mom along with hearing about how different life was for a young boy. J turns 9 this year and his older brothers are in their teens and early 20s. Hearing about all the hard labor Davy was expected to do or how he had his first job at 12 is a real eye-opener.
We take turns reading aloud from each chapter. This also allows me to see where he is struggling with his reading. Anytime we reach a word that is unfamiliar, we stop to talk about what he thinks it means. If he is incorrect in guessing from the author’s use of the word, we pull up the definition.

So far, we are consistently using the chapter questions. It sometimes amazes me how he can quickly forget key points from what we just read. When that happens, I pull open the book to have him find the correct answer. Occasionally, the questions are not directly related to the reading but rather seek an opinion.
Comparing with Other Portrayals of Davy Crockett
As a child of the 1970s, I received a definite indoctrination via certain TV productions. This includes the multi-episode airing of Davy Crockett from a particular studio. Sadly, I fear that there are kids out there who have heard The Ballad of Davy Crockett which was tied with this showing and portrays this American hero incorrectly.
Reading this title showed us quickly that while Davy Crockett was born in Tennessee and did go on to do great things, he did not kill a bear at the tender age of 3. Rather, this book shows you just how vulnerable he was a youth. While he became a great marksman able to hunt for his family or employers, he still had fears of attack by Indians or wild animal.
This is something which does come up in the study guide. You are encouraged to view the short series with your child and then discuss how it portrays Davy Crockett differently from the biography of him.
Final Takeaway for Heroes of History Davy Crockett
I continue to be impressed by YWAM Publishing and how they bring famous men and women to life. Any child who has heard the tales of Davy Crockett or the early push westward will find this title eye-opening.
For homeschool parents wanting a complete incorporation into their studies, the Study Guide is well worth the purchase price. Everything is laid out for you to pick and choose what fits your child and family’s needs. The only struggle may be to not over do it!
