Christmas has to be one of my favorite times of year. There’s all the glitter and glam of a Christmas tree with plenty of lights and ornaments which are like little time capsules for our family. I love seeing lights on the houses, especially here in Alaska where daylight is incredibly short in December. Parties where people are relaxed and enjoying each other’s company are joy. And, shopping for just the right presents for loved ones can be a wonderful way to get into the giving spirit.
Now that the boys are a bit older, I have them get more involved in all the fun of the Christmas season. The older boys were responsible for stringing the lights on our Christmas tree while the younger ones joined me in decorating it with just a smattering of our ornaments.
One of the recently released movies which certain boys in my house are eager to receive on Christmas Day is the new Planes: Search and Rescue.

Beyond their anticipation of Santa bringing that particular movie for the family, several of my boys have a love of planes with my eldest son longing to become a pilot. They love when we’ve traveled back to the lower 48 on the big planes and my eldest son spent a month last fall in Galena at an intense flight school exploration program. Their love of flight is not unique as air is one of the main forms of transportation to reach many areas of Alaska. So, plane fever is quite rampant here in the 49th state and you can find them everywhere (in use or on display.)

With school out for my 6th grader and a pre-K son who could use some time practicing his scissor skills, I thought it might be nice to get a little crafty. The project I decided to have them do was to make a Disney Planes Inspired Garland. We also tried our hand at cutting out snowflakes, which left us with mostly ‘interesting’ results.

To make it easier on the boys, I found an airplane and helicopter shape which I traced to create a pattern. I then printed onto colorful paper, although they could have colored each one to make a really custom look. (If you click on the photo below, you can download the pdf file to use in your house.)
Once the pages were printed, the boys got down to work.

It had been ages since I’d done paper snowflakes, so our results weren’t that good. However I used a few layered together to make a flower like ‘anchor’ to add to the mantel.

Once all of the shapes were cut out, I carefully made small holes to run yarn through for the garland. I then tied of the ends, making a small circle to use on the hooks. Our finished product isn’t going to win any awards, but it is all OURS.

Walmart has several of the Planes merchandise on Rollback, just in time for last-minute shopping trips. Depending upon your store, you might find a dedicated end cap display area like we did at the newest location in Anchorage.

However, they also had more options available down one of the toy aisles dedicated towards vehicles.

While these were not all marked as Rollback pricing here in Alaska, I’ve heard that you can find the following in your local Walmart:
Disney Planes Flight to the Finish Speedway Rollback to $24.97
Disney Planes Fire & Rescue Die-Cast Vehicles, 3-Pack Rollback to $14.97
Disney Planes Fire & Rescue Deluxe Talking Vehicle Assortment Rollback to $19.97
Planes Character Assortment die-cast set and the Disney Planes: Fire and Rescue Character Assortment die-cast set are both on rollback at $4.97.
The Die-Cast Vehicles 3 pack which I picked up are just adorable and perfect for engaging my 5 year old in some imaginative play.

And, as a mom I appreciate that they do not take up a lot of space or could even be packed for enjoyment away from home.

What are some crafts you are doing with the kids to deck the halls of your house?

This is a great idea for a garland. We used to make paper snow flakes every year to decorate the walls.
Your boys are super cute, and they look like they had a fun time making this fun garland! Great post; we haven\’t seen Planes yet, but hopefully soon.
Oh that garland is so stinking cute! And my kids just love the Disney Planes toys! What a great combo!
That is such a cute idea, and I bet it kept them entertained for awhile!!! Loved the movie Disney Planes.
Well this certainly will keep the kiddos busy for a while, perhaps while they watch the movie! I love how cute it is with the red and green- we treasure hand made decorations in our house!
The garland would also be adorable for any little boy’s room that has a plane and car theme!
What a cute decoration! Christmas will be a perfect time to watch Planes.
What a super cute Christmas decoration for the kids to make. I am always looking for fun things like this to keep them busy.
What a cute idea! I will be printing some out for the kids and I to do over break! Thanks for sharing!
What a cute idea. Reminds me of making popcorn garland as a kid but we can use this each year and not worry about eating more than we put on a string.
Such a cute idea! Love the final look, so cute!
Disneys movie Planes looks so cute. I really enjoyed Cars so i cant wait to see it!
This is a great idea for getting the kids involved with some creative decorating. It’s unique & cute.
These are great. Our little guys love Cars (the 3 year old sleeps with a match box car Lightning McQueen instead of a teddy bear) we haven’t seen Planes yet, but clearly we need to.
I think I see a last minute decoration coming! My kids love everything Disney, and they love doing crafts. Perfect!
Oh what fun. We love that movie and love making crafts like that. Thanks so much for sharing.
I’m going to send this to my sister. She loves paper crafts like this.
Oh what a fun craft! I just made an ornament garland with my daughter.
This is such a cute idea! It’s perfect for people with little kids.
That came out great. I love it. What a cute idea you came up with!
Thanks, Robin. If I’d had an evergreen garland, I would have used that instead of the string. But, this way the boys can move it to their small Christmas tree if they want.
