When you go to the movies, what type of experience do you seek?

Often, we watch a film to escape our life.

Sometimes it is a movie strictly for entertainment.

Other times, it is one that leaves you thinking big thoughts. Or, maybe it is about someone or an event that happened in the past. I know that those are often the ones which lead to rich discussions with the boys.

One such film is The Zookeeper’s Wife which releases in theaters this Friday, March 31.

About The Zookeeper’s Wife

In 1939 Poland, Antonina Żabińska (portrayed by two-time Academy Award nominee Jessica Chastain) and her husband, Dr. Jan Żabiński (Johan Heldenbergh, a European Film Award nominee for the Academy Award-nominated The Broken Circle Breakdown), have the Warsaw Zoo flourishing under his stewardship and her care.

When their country is invaded by the Germans, Jan and Antonina are stunned and forced to report to the Reich’s newly appointed chief zoologist, Lutz Heck (Golden Globe Award nominee Daniel Brühl of Captain America: Civil War).

To fight back on their own terms, the Żabińskis covertly begin working with the Resistance and put into action plans to save lives out of what has become the Warsaw Ghetto, with Antonina putting herself and even her children at great risk.

The Zookeeper’s Wife Featurette by Hugh Hewitt

Nationally syndicated radio host and conservative columnist Hugh Hewitt (you may remember him as one of the moderators from the 2016 Presidential debates) recently screened the film.  Hugh was inspired by The Zookeeper’s Wife and called it: “A powerful and breathtaking movie!”

Hugh is so touched by Jan and Antonina’s story that he recorded this wonderful featurette (see below) about these Christian heroes.  The featurette serves as a reminder that true heroism is within us all – it is our bravery, character, and faith that strengthens us and pushes us to commit extraordinary deeds that inspire others.

Jan and Antonina Żabiński, two Christian zookeepers risked their lives to save and shelter over 300 Jews from the Nazis in Poland during World War II.  At a time when everyone lived in fear, Jan and Antonina refused to stand aside in the face of injustice – they resisted and stood against evil.  The State of Israel would later honor the Żabińskis as Righteous Among the Nations.

  1. This movie interests me because of the issues of faith and courage. The plot sounds like a compelling exploration of these issues.

  2. What appeals to me most is that it is based on a powerful true story – it’s nice to see that there are people who will always do the right thing and help each other when the time calls for it.

  3. I want to know more about the couple and what compelled them to want to help rescue the Jewish community even though it was a risk to their lives

  4. This story shows great heroism. I would love to take my son to see this movie to show him that there are heroes in this world
