When Calls the Heart: Lost and Found

Early in January, I shared a review of When Calls the Heart, a movie made for the Hallmark Channel as the launching pad for a new series.  Shortly after that release, the first episodes aired and they are now available on DVD as When Calls the Heart: Lost and Found. My family was given the chance to review this DVD and I’m sharing about it today.

“When Calls the Heart” tells the captivating story of Elizabeth Thatcher (Erin Krakow), a young teacher accustomed to her high society life, who receives her first classroom assignment in Coal Valley, a small coalmining town where life is simple, but often fraught with challenges. Lori Loughlin plays Abigail Stanton, a wife and mother whose husband, the foreman of the mine, along with a dozen other miners, has just been killed in an explosion.

The newly widowed women find their faith is tested when they must go to work in the mines to keep a roof over their heads. Elizabeth charms most everyone in Coal Valley, except Constable Jack Thornton (Daniel Lissing) who believes Thatcher’s wealthy father has doomed the lawman’s career by insisting he be assigned in town to protect the shipping magnate’s daughter. Living in a 19th century coal town, Elizabeth will have to learn the ways of the frontier if she wishes to thrive in the rural west on her own.

When Calls the Heart- “Lost and Found” is a feature length film from the first two episodes of the When Calls the Heart television series. The When Calls the Heart television series debuted on the Hallmark Channel to more than 3 million viewers, making it the No. 2 for the night on all of cable for the primary telecast at 9 p.m and No. 3 overall in households.

My Thoughts on When Calls the Heart: Lost and Found

I’d managed to catch the first episode when it aired on TV, but our DVR bumped recording the second episode when a boy child decided to set other things as a higher priority.  So, I was glad to have the opportunity to review this title and see the episode without commercials breaking it apart.  A few of the boys watched parts of it with me, too.

There are a few things I like about this series.  Unlike some options on broadcast TV, this show really is family friendly.  I don’t have to worry about any of my boys being in the room when it is on the TV and they often will stop and watch for a while.  I think the draw is the same as it was for many of us with Little House on the Prairie….we love seeing how people lived in days gone by. 

My eldest son did question whether a group of women would have been pushing for the right to work a mine.  However, that question lead to discussion about how frontier life did not allow many women the luxury of choosing what work they would do.  If your husband was dead and you were going to lose the roof over your head, you just might do things you thought unthinkable in the past.

If you enjoy historical fiction or enjoy books and shows like Little House on the Prairie, then you definitely want to check out When Calls the Heart.
