Something that youth often take for granted is health. Everything works as it is supposed to. Unless there is an injury, you do not experience the regular aches and pains which set in during midlife. Some people can even eat whatever they want and never see a consequence in their youth.
Flash forward to those ‘middle ages’ (aka as going over the hill at 40!) and all of a sudden you realize that your actions have a dramatic impact upon your overall health. Things don’t work the way they did during your youth.
As I’ve matured, I find myself actively seeking out ways to embrace a healthy lifestyle. Some days it seems like I take a few steps in the right direction to just slide the opposite way for a bit.
With the reboot on my fitness routine and nutrition, I thought it was the perfect time to share my few easy to implement choices that help me achieve better health.
Easy to Implement Choices for a Healthier Lifestyle
Drink LOTS of Water!
I’ll admit that when the weather cools down in Alaska, I have a real hard time with this. You find how much water to drink by dividing your current weight in half. That is now the minimum number of ounces of water to drink each day.
If you drink something with caffeine, then you need to replace that volume with more water. If you live in a dry climate, you may need more as well. So, use the calculation as a starting point.
I like to have a cup which holds a set amount of water and consume several each day. If I have it readily available, then I am more likely to sip throughout the day rather than gulp it all in a few sittings.
As a short cut, I figured that if I drink a gallon of water I have met my goal for the day including the extra water to offset the coffee each morning. So, I now have a gallon jug for water just for me.
Eat Your Fruits and Vegetables
Some people really struggle with this. After all, it is easier to grab something ready-made to eat than fix it yourself. And, most of those ready-to-eat options are lacking in produce.
My solution is to include a BIG salad on a daily basis. Typically, I can get 3 or more servings of vegetables in that one dish. (This Chicken Salad with Balsamic Vinaigrette shared on my other site is a favorite right now.)
A key to this category is to eat more vegetables than fruits. I’ll admit there are days when I’ve had a piece of fruit at every meal and totally neglected my vegetable intact.
Get Regular Exercise
Sadly, our modern society leans towards a sedentary lifestyle. Much ‘work’ is done on computers. This is not what our bodies need.
Since most of us are not going to change careers to become farmers or something else involving manual labor, we need to include a minimal amount of exercise. This could be
This could be taking a walk, lifting weights, or doing yoga.
The whole point is to engage in motion that gets us off our rears. 10 minutes bursts of activity throughout the day can be effective when you do not have 30 to 60 minutes to dedicate at one time.
Give Your Body Plenty of Sleep
How much sleep you need may be different than your friends. Typically, adults need 7 to 9 hours of sleep a night.
With the onset of menopause, I find my sleep disrupted for a while around the witching hour of 3 a.m. I end up getting a good 4 or 5 hours before then. If I am lucky, I can catch a few more hours after that hour of tossing and turning in bed.
I will also add that I do my best to block out light in the room. And, we booted the television from our bedroom years ago to claim more restful sleep.
Use Daily Supplements to Support Your Body
Many people consider a multivitamin their daily supplement which covers a multitude of poor choices. For many, that may not be quite enough to help support optimal body function.
While I still use a multivitamin (found in my daily breakfast ‘shake’), there are several supplements which have made their way into my daily routine. Each one is researched for the ability to address different areas where my body needs target support. For me, that is my immune response which has gone haywire in recent years as evidenced by cholinergic urticaria and hypothyroidism (possibly Hashimoto’s although I do not have an official diagnosis for it.)

Adding a Turmeric Supplement to My Health Routine
One of the health related issues I’ve been experiencing recently is inflammation. While it is a normal response in our body, I am finding mine has left the round of normal and become problematic. Add in the aches and pains plus my slower recovery from exercise, and I could see that a solution is needed.
My research showed that a turmeric supplement was the next thing to add to my current routine.

I decided to take the plunge. While shopping at my local Costco, I found the new formulation of youtheory® Turmeric Extra Strength 120 Capsules. I’ve had several friends recommend youtheory® products which is one of the reasons why I went for their product. (The other has to do with bioavailability and the inclusion of black pepper to help boost absorption.)
Our store currently has both the old and new formulas of the youtheory turmeric capsules. I could easily tell the new one by its bright orange label on the lid top and the 1,000 mg marking on the front label.
While the difference in packaging is there, the bigger change is in the actual formulation. The older one had 450 mg of turmeric in 3 tablets. The new one provides 1,000 mg of turmeric in 2 vegan capsules. That’s 3 times the amount of turmeric per capsule! And, I am glad to see they are made without gluten ingredients since I am minimizing my intake of gluten again.
Now that I am ready with my youtheory turmeric supplement, I hope to see improvements in many areas of my life. Particularly with how quickly I can rebound from working my muscles through regular exercise and with a healthy immune response.
