Last weekend, the boys were thrilled to have the new Three Musketeers to watch from the local Redbox.
Synopsis ~
The hot-headed young D’Artagnan along with three former legendary but now down on their luck Musketeers must unite and defeat a beautiful double agent and her villainous employer from seizing the French throne and engulfing Europe in war.
Our Thoughts ~
There are many versions of The Three Musketeers in movie format. This is the only one the boys have seen so far. They loved some aspects of it (e.g. swordplay), wished some things were left out (e.g. M’Lady’s skimpy wardrobes at times and hints of romance), and commented about the completely implausible settings (e.g. Da Vinci inspired war machines in the sky.)
We’ve enjoyed a variety of films in the past and this one was appealing overall for the boys. They actually watched it twice in the time we had it from Redbox, once on their own while I was busy on tasks and a second time with Mr. O and I. I’d definitely say this fits the Pirates of the Caribbean style of movie with lots of action and some situations that are so unrealistic yet ‘work’ in a larger than life film full of special effects.
What I am hoping is that enjoying this not so stellar movie version of the story will inspire the older boys to read the novel. And, maybe we’ll check out other movie versions to see which one is our favorite. But, I’m also thinking that the boys will be anxious to see if a sequel is made to this particular film as the ending definitely set it up.
