Last summer, I reviewed the book Glamorous Illusions by Lisa T. Bergren which had the protagonist pulled from a destitute lifestyle and be placed into one of glamour as she embarks with half-siblings she never knew on the “Grand Tour” of Europe. Now, the tour continues in the novel Grave Consequences.

My Thoughts on Grave Consequences

Having read Glamorous Illusions, I had a sense of Ms. Bergren’s writing style and the characters who would be the mainstays in this novel. But, as I had read the previous book last summer, it took me a little while to ‘re-connect’ with the characters. Once I got back into the grove, though, the story quickly pulled me in with the desire to see what would happen next.

While Glamorous Illusions had a mixture of Cora being awed and the difficulty getting along with her new found family, Grave Consequences has more focus upon the family pulling together to combat the dangerous men encountered in Paris who continue to follow them across Europe. And, there is more romance inserted into the novel as Cora and Will come to realize their hearts are drawn together. Only, Will is of course ‘beneath’ her in social standing and therefore not an acceptable suitor in her father’s eyes.

Like Glamorous Illusions, Cora continues to have the wide-eyed girlish reactions to many of the places they visit. However, she also starts to struggle with the realization that her life is forever changed and there may be no going back to the life she knew. In the spectrum of things, the constant evolution of our persona is something that happens even if not as dramatic as Cora’s situation.

Overall, I love the theme of personal change and growth that comes out in this novel. I also enjoyed the descriptions of different locales they visit on the Grand Tour with Ms. Bergren attempting to be as accurate as possible for what was there at that point in history.
