Puss in Boots

I have been, or can be if you click on a link and make a purchase, compensated via a cash payment, gift, or something else of value for writing this post. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.

Our family just watched the new to DVD movie, Puss in Boots, this afternoon.  And, I have to say that somehow the Shrek franchise of films seems to be able to hit the mark each time.

Long before he even met Shrek, the notorious fighter, lover and outlaw Puss in Boots becomes a hero when he sets off on an adventure with the tough and street smart Kitty Softpaws and the mastermind Humpty Dumpty to save his town. This is the true story of The Cat, The Myth, The Legend… The Boots. — (C) Dreamworks/Paramount

The animation is well done (as have been other titles in the Shrek movie franchise) and there is plenty of humor for both children and adults.  J got excited when Puss in Boots took out his sword to fight and loved a dance fight scene between Puss and Kitty.  I can even see some teachable moments about friendship, how our actions can come back to hurt us, and the need for forgiveness.

Like the Shrek movies from which is spun off, there are some innuendos throughout the movie (Puss is a lover more than a fighter, etc.)  But, many are ones that might fly right over a younger child’s radar.  Instead, the movie does seem to have a heavier focus upon the friendship that existed between Puss in Boots and Humpty Dumpty.

Aside from the innuendos, there is the scene of Humpty falling from the bridge with egg shell seen below that could be scary for some children.  However, a subsequent glimpse during the closing credits indicates that the golden egg that appeared to have crushed Humpty was really him and he’s now happy with the golden goose.

What we haven’t watched yet is The Three Diablos, a new short that is included on the Blu Ray version or available with a 2 DVD set.  My guess is that it is also family friendly and helps to stretch time with this character.  I do know that the boys (and me!) will be watching this film again.

If you’ve somehow missed the trailers, you can view one here:

For anyone considering purchasing this title, there are 4 different options I found on Amazon.  (We have BluRay and went with the 3D set as Best Buy had it on sale yesterday.)

This post has been submitted for inclusion in The Christian Home Issue 51 hosted here. As the featured columnist for the Movies and Music category, you can be looking forward to weekly posts on what we are watching or music we’ve enjoyed.

Feel free to leave suggestions for me as well that are family friendly or uplifting for adults.  While I have movies and some music selections in mind, I’m always on the lookout for other great choices.
