40 Days of Seeking Him ~ Day 4
I have been, or can be if you click on a link and make a purchase, compensated via a cash payment, gift, or something else of value for writing this post. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.
Last night I was too tired to write a post. The boys and I had been gone for the afternoon at a homeschool group bread baking educational event. Then, we went as a family to the first Soup and Stations at our parish. By the time we returned home, I was wiped and longing for some sleep. Tonight, though, I wanted to write a few words.
When I was at church last night, I saw a table of resources and picked up a few. Among the resources were copies of The Word Among Us for Lent 2012. The copy I picked up has not only the daily reflections and articles, but also the daily readings for the season. As a busy mom, I need tools and resources to quickly grab and integrate into my days and this one fits the bill.
I am seriously thinking a subscription to this ‘magazine’ will be happening this year.
During a late lunch today, I took time to read the reflection for the day. It took the words “Follow Me” from the Gospel reading of the day (Luke 5:27-32) and reminds us that Christ calls us to follow Him as he called the many disciples who walked with Him.
I also love that this particular Gospel reminds us that Christ came for the sinners of the world. “I have not come to call the righteous to repentance but sinners.”
I know that I am most definitely a sinner who does not always follow Christ the way I probably should. My pesky ‘flesh’ gets in the way with demands of making it happy in the short term. As I’ve matured, I’d like to think I have better control over the flesh and am truly following Christ’s call in all aspects of my life. But, I know that I’d be living in serious self-denial.
I have the active participation down in many areas of my life. I attend Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of obligation as well as other times (like First Friday) when I am able. I pray daily and have started back to a more regular reading of Holy Scripture. But, am I doing all I should be doing or am I sometimes trying to avoid challenging situations?
It is living fully the life God calls me to lead, which includes following Christ in all things, that I seek. And, I am forever grateful that He showers His people with mercy and forgiveness.

I hope you will join us on this journey as we prepare our hearts to receive the wonderful gift of salvation we’ve been given through Jesus’ death and resurrection.

I love this post. I used to work every weekend and I got out of going to mass like I used to. I have found myself going to mass at times on the catholic channel where they have mass many times during the day. I am confused with the deacons who are regular people and they are acting like priests. This bothers me and I suppose since I live in such a small town that the lack of priests can be the problem. I am confused about many things in the church these days. The church seems to be conforming to society more than its self. I love your honestly and that you are celebrating the lent season and coming of Easter. Thanks for reminding me of things. I listen to a lot of archives of Mother angelica and different topics on the internet of the bible. There is so much out there which is wonderful.
Rita,
I think there can be some confusion as to the role of a deacon. They can do a LOT of things, but there are some things that only a priest can do.
As for the Church conforming to society, I think this has been true for some parishes while the Church as a whole has not conformed. It can be very hard to not get sucked into the relativism prevalent in society today and think it is ‘logical’ and the Church hasn’t a clue about a thing.
I’m so lucky that I have resources like The Word Among Us, and the Little Black Book of daily devotions.
I was just wondering with a friend – how it is possible that I have such a clear vision of who I want to be, and I think it, study it and pray about it, but way too often, when I’m under pressure, I fall back on all of my flaws? *sigh*
Catherine ~ if we could solve that ‘little problem’, the world would be such a nice place. That pesky ‘flesh’, though, gets in the way and we often take the familiar paths. I know that I am most definitely guilty of that! I am thankful that God forgives us our sins and we can start anew.
Self-denial, I need more of that. It’s so true, our flesh gets in the way. Thankfully, He gives grace and mercy.
Loved this post.
I missed writing today, but am caught up with reading this week’s posts, that is an accomplishment in itself!
I’m not quite done with reading all the posts this week.
Self-denial is something that is firmly planted on my heart right now, so don’t be surprised if I start writing about it again.
