At my house, when Summer is quickly approaching I find myself trying to wrap up the current school year.

When we first received these kits to review, we were preparing to move out of Alaska. With no idea of the actual date, I skipped signing boys up for summer activities. Yet, I knew they could use some fun in their days.

Running a Summer Camp

Have you noticed how many summer activities are available to parents these days?

While we homeschool the boys and do not need them for alternative childcare, I know that my boys have always enjoyed attending certain ones.

For some of my friends with dual-income families, the summer camps are how they make sure the kids are safe and not stuck home alone for the summer.

Even with a large selection of summer camp options here, there are parents who can’t get their child or children into one.

For the industrious mom, running a summer camp can both entertain her kids and bring some income to the family.

Selecting a Summer Camp Kit

Earning Money With A Summer Camp

As I shared, there are parents out there looking for low-cost activities during the workday for their school-aged kids.

What better way to keep your kids occupied and earn a little extra cash than running your own summer camp!

Before you print flyers and start promoting, you’ll need to check on the regulations for your community.

If you are looking at just a handful of kids besides your own, then it might be permitted. I have done classes in my home without any zoning issues.

Once you are clear to host it at your home or find a place to use in the community, print up flyers or send notices out to your local friends.

Many areas have Facebook groups or you may have access to a Nextdoor community.

Then, you need to take the time to gather up all the supplies needed. This includes the food for all of the recipes. Just keep in mind how you’ll handle anyone with special needs.

Determining What to Charge

You will also want to research the cost of summer camps in your area to help you set a price.

For example, the rec department may run a slightly structured program outside for $150 per child per week. I know that they are on the low side when compared to those held at the museum, zoo, and local university.

They do not include any food, which I would do. This could balance out the perceived value to prospective families. So, I may price just a bit under if I am going to provide all daycare.

An alternative pricing approach could be to use the local rate for in-home child care.

If it is $5 per child per hour and you plan to have 3 hours per day for 5 days, then you’d set the price at $75 per kid.

My youngest son is now lobbying for me to hold 1 or 2 weeks of summer camp at our house.

His top picks?  The Wizard School and Superhero ones.

Even if we do not host with tons of other kids, I know that these kits will ensure lots of fun this summer.
