The Homeschool Journey Can Be Bumpy. Apologia’s How to Homeschool Can Help

I have been, or can be if you click on a link and make a purchase, compensated via a cash payment, gift, or something else of value for writing this post. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.

I am excited to share this new post on the Homeschool Journey with Apologia Educational Ministries, a company with which we are an affiliate & share affiliate links. This post was made possible with a copy of How to HOMESCHOOL with Stunning Confidence, Contagious Joy, and Amazing Focus (DVD & Coursebook) for review as part of the Homeschool Review Crew.

Back when I first seriously considered homeschooling, there were limited resources. I checked out the few books at our local library to read. And, I talked to every single person I had ever met who I knew homeschooled.

Even having done all of that, I felt like I was jumping into a deep abyss.

That’s why I was excited to get a copy of the new How to Homeschool program from Apologia. I wanted to see what it offered and whether I would recommend it to a new homeschool parent.

About How to Homeschool from Apologia

How to HOMESCHOOL with Stunning Confidence, Contagious Joy, and Amazing Focus (DVD & Coursebook) from Apologia

This program consists of 2 DVDs and a slim coursebook with a total of 15 sessions.

Each of the DVDs has recordings of Rachael Carman and Leslie Nunnery talking as if you are joining them in their home. They are both long term homeschool moms who have seen children graduate from high school. If there is someone you want to give input on how to homeschool, it is a parent who has graduated a child into adulthood.

They really do take an “in my home” approach with a comfortable sitting area where the 2 ladies chat on the specific section being covered.

The book has some reading to do as well as an assignment for each of the chapters. You can either read from the coursebook first or watch the DVD interview as your first step for each chapter. The DVD chapters correspond with the coursebook chapters, so this is easy to implement.

My Thoughts on How to Homeschool from Apologia

The target audience for this resource is predominately a new to homeschooling Christian parent. However, there is always something to gain for even us ‘veterans.’ If there is one thing I’ve learned it is that your homeschool experience is constantly changing. What suits you now may not work in a year. So, for me, watching the videos has been a great way to reaffirm our family’s decision to walk this path.

You really do feel like you’re just listening in on 2 friends talk about their journey. Neither Rachel or Leslie come across as preachy. Rather, they are pulling from their years of experience in the trenches to share with the viewers.

A Few Recommendations

While none of the segments is exceptionally long, I suggest that you try to not view too many in one sitting. There is that temptation to plow through the DVD. And, you might be able to do that over the course of a weekend. However, there is so much covered that after the first few segments you may experience that deer in the headlights sensation.

Aside from information overload, trying to work through this program too quickly will not reap the rewards a steadier pace will see. The assignments are not difficult, but without doing them you lose out on growth and vision.

Involving your spouse in the process is also beneficial. My husband is currently unable to do any evaluation of our homeschool and plans for the future at the moment. However, I want to take the time to discuss some aspects as we transition another child into the high school years.

Overall, I find this to be a great resource for a Christian parent considering or just beginning their homeschool journey.
