This past week, we contemplated going to the $1 movie deal at the local Regal cinema. The new Gulliver’s Travels was on deck and it was one of the only movies playing in the summer line up that we hadn’t seen yet. However, with a guest coming in from out of town that necessitated extra cleaning and knowing it was available at a local Redbox, we ended up watching it at home.
The boys really enjoyed the Jack Black version of the story. He brings the comic relief almost expected now from him. One scene that stood out for me was when he sings “War. What is it good for? Absolutely nothing. Say it again!” with the Lilliputians and their enemies flanking him. The boys also found it interesting to see him go from the ‘giant’ surrounded by little people to the little person pushed around like a doll by a giant girl.
All told, this was an interesting retelling of the classic novel with a moderate dose of comedy added into the mix. I’d say that it made for an almost ‘goofy’ flavor to the film. And, my boys definitely like goofy!
Reading a few review sites, I saw the PG rating was for rude humor (yep, saw at least one or two occasions of that), mild language (honestly can’t remember off hand what that was, but will admit that I was multi-tasking as they watched) and mild action (fighting scenes, but nothing especially violent or disgusting.)
I’m now wondering what P will say if he ends up reading Jonathan Swift’s novel. Knowing him, he’ll point out all the differences.
