Most years, there is a flurry of activity around town for different events and gatherings. But, not so much in 2020 or even 2021.

That meant having more time to get my fill of holiday shows.

Godmothered on Disney+ is one option for a magical Christmas film experience.

About Godmothered on Disney+

Set at Christmas time, “Godmothered” is a comedy about Eleanor, a young, inexperienced fairy godmother-in-training (Jillian Bell), who upon hearing that her chosen profession is facing extinction, decides to show the world that people still need fairy godmothers.

Finding a mislaid letter from a 10-year-old girl in distress, Eleanor tracks her down and discovers that the girl, Mackenzie, is now a 40-year-old single mom (Isla Fisher) working at a news station in Boston.

Having lost her husband several years earlier, Mackenzie has all but given up on the idea of “happily ever after,” but Eleanor is bound and determined to give Mackenzie a happiness makeover, whether she likes it or not.

Godmothered premiered December 4, 2020 exclusively on Disney+.

Our Thoughts on Godmothered

My youngest son joined me in viewing the screener for this show.

When the movie was over, he said he enjoyed it some. But, fairy godmothers aren’t so much his thing (since he’s a boy.)

That didn’t stop him from laughing at spots in the film.

Like when Eleanor gets on the sled and loses control. It was a funny moment that had an unexpected consequence.

And at some of the things Gary, a raccoon turned animal servant with magic, does in the film.

Many of the funny scenes do involve the rather quirky godmother wanna-be as she tries to maintain her fairy tale notions in a world where they don’t apply.

As a mom with many more years of life behind me, I appreciated the overall messages I got from the film.

Fairy tales are fun to hear, but not real life. However, we can find happiness in our lives. Just not the “happy ever after” life promoted by those stories.

Also, the movie reminds us of the importance of family and supporting each other as best we can.

Mackenzie thought she was being a good mom to her teenage daughter, Jane. But, she comes to realize her protectiveness isn’t what her daughter needed.

If you like fairy tales and sometimes corny holiday shows, then YES. Head on over to Disney+ and start streaming.

Is this a show I’d watch every year? Probably not. But it was a bit of fresh air for this holiday season.
