Enjoying Lunch at the Talkeetna Roadhouse

One upside to having out of town guests go on a day long expedition is that they were eager to patronize different establishments rather than brown bagging all the time. Believe me, my boys were MORE than eager to have Grandma and her friend buy them meals at restaurants! Before heading up to Talkeetna for the day, I polled a few local friends as to where we should go.
There are quite a few options in Talkeetna. You can grab a bite to eat on the run at Nagley’s Market. Or, you can visit a restaurant.
Twister Creek had live music for those sitting outside. (FYI, I recently had Single Engine Red from Denali Brewing Co. upon the recommendation of a friend and it was really good!)
We heard that the pizza place in town is really good, but as the boys love my homemade pizza we wanted something else. West Rib Pub & Grill would have caught my eldest son’s attention with it’s Man versus Food connection. But, as he wasn’t with us, we went another route.
The Talkeetna Roadhouse is what caught my eye and got our patronage for lunch that day. (The second photo is the long side of the Roadhouse and they do still rent rooms.)
It’s a ‘find a seat’ kind of place and the table we got was right by the food cases. That probably is NOT the best place for me to sit with hungry boys eyeing up baked good galore.
The first big choice was breakfast or lunch food.
I went with a compromise and ordered a quiche with side salad.
The boys went with homemade mac and cheese (which is to die for and probably a gazillion calories!) and homemade reindeer chili.
We are eagerly anticipating the next chance we have to visit the Talkeetna Roadhouse. In the meantime, the boys keep begging me to figure out how to duplicate their mac and cheese at home.

We try to go to local restaurants because I like to try something new. The Mac n Cheese look so good!
i always try to ask the locals. forget the chain restaurant when traveling. those dishes look mouth watering.
We have very few chain restaurants that we enjoy patronizing. I usually like the locally owned places better.
We always look for the local spots when we are traveling. Our general rule is if you can get it at home, there is no need to have it on vacation!
This place looks great! I love to stop and eat at local places when I’m vacationing. Why eat the same food you can get at home when you could try something new and delicious? My fiance and I are going on a road trip this Sept., and I’m already researching the best local restaurants online!
