I am always on the search for new family friendly movies like Dolphin Island.

About Dolphin Island

Annabel is a 14-year-old girl who lives aboard a boat with her grandfather since her parents died.

Together they enjoy island life, fishing in the mornings before she heads off to school.

And, helping maintain the animal sanctuary center her father started and where her best friend, a dolphin named Mitzy, lives.

But things are about to change and disrupt their somewhat idyllic life.

Annabel’s maternal grandparents have arrived from New York City and have contracted a shady barrister to help get custody of her.

And a new social worker has her doubts about Peter’s ability to provide a safe haven for Annabel.

Our Thoughts on the Film

Overall, it was an enjoyable family film.

There is a small faith connection with the maternal grandmother sharing a family heirloom necklace with a cross. And, she prays during a tense moment when they fear for Annabelle’s safety. But, it is not the main focus of the storyline.

My youngest son watched with me. At first, he thought the dolphins weren’t real. This just showed me that he missed out on seeing them in person like his older brothers. (They had 2 dolphins who played the part of Mitzy.)

As a parent watching the film, I appreciated how they wove different themes into the film.

Just like the inclusion of faith, the themes of courage and forgiveness is there. They are not ‘in your face’, though, which means younger kids could miss seeing those themes.

After his comment about the dolphin, we talked about island life and how it is different from what he knows.

And the challenge that comes when different family members want to pull you in different directions.

He did find it humorous that the lawyer ends up looking very much like a pirate after a few punches were given by others in anger.

I put this movie into the genre of something nice to watch. It isn’t one that I think my boys would ask to watch another time. The message of love and accountability is easily caught with one viewing.
