Making Irish Potato Brown Bread
Before I share the recipe, I would be remiss to not share a bit about tools you may need as well as particular ingredients. Baking your own bread is very easy IF you have what you need (and a little patience at times.)

Or, mix a few grains like Spelt or Kamut in smaller amounts to create a different experience. Freshly ground grain is the most nutritious option when it comes to making your bread. It also produces an incredibly tasty bread.

The next tool you will need is a bread machine. Make sure it has a whole wheat setting on it so the machine can handle the extra workload of a whole wheat dough. Also, the whole wheat setting has different lengths to the mixing and kneading times compared to a regular setting.
We have an older Cuisinart bread machine that I love. It has settings for either 1 1/2 or 2-pound loaves and a long list of settings that can be used. Depending on the bread you are making, you could use the delay timer and have the bread ready when you want it.

This recipe originated in one of my absolute favorite bread machine cookbooks, The Bread Lover’s Bread Machine Cookbook by Beth Hensperger. When it first came out, I rotated libraries in the Kent Ohio area to have it checked out. After checking it out for the 12th time in just over a year, I decided to buy the hardback. I have not regretted that purchase and every single recipe I have made from the book has been well received in my house.
If you have a bread machine or are going to get one to feed the family wonderful fresh bread, I highly recommend that you get a copy of The Bread Lover’s Bread Machine Cookbook. The hardcover is not cheap. But, there are both paperback and Kindle options that are quite affordable. Considering a good quality bread from the store could be $4 or $5 per loaf, you’ll have recouped your investment in short order.
Whether you eat plain while it is still warm or toast it later with jam as a topping, Irish Potato Brown Bread is sure to please. I thoroughly enjoyed a slice warmed in the toaster over with strawberry jam on top. It made a wonderful part of a lunch with egg and sauteed kale.
My boys were also very sad when the last slice was eaten. Guess I need to train them on how to make it, too!
