I can’t recall if we did a chocolate Advent calendar each year when I was growing up. There’s just something nice about having a tangible way to mark time when eagerly anticipating a big event, which Christmas is. So we are counting down the days until Christmas with an Advent Calendar this year. (Note ~ links in this post maybe affiliate ones!)
The one we are using is something I knew my boys would be crazy about…a Lego Star Wars Advent calendar that I purchased in 2011 and tucked away for the future. I completely forgot to pull it out last year, but the renovation of our master bedroom brought it to light and I presented it to the boys this past Sunday.
The big challenge now is to keep them from taking the individual day’s piece and having them get mingled with the giant mass of Legos in the play / school room. One son was caught playing with the first few days’ items and when he went to put them back one dropped to the ground making the little pieces fly everywhere. We did find them all, but now they are on severe restriction on playing with them until Christmas Day. Guess that makes me a mean mommy!
Instead, they are placing the finished item (as there are a few pieces per day to put together into something) back into the holding spot.
There are so many different types of Advent calendars you can use. There’s also the option of making a paper chain to help mark the days, too. I think for the younger kids the important aspect is to make sure they have that tangible way to count down the days.
If you want a ready made interactive Advent Calendar that gives the kids new ‘toys’ for the house, there are many options and price points from Lego, KNex and Playmobil. All of them are great brands and products we love. (Clicking on the photos takes you to Amazon with our blog’s affiliate link.)
