It is the last Monday of the month and time for the Poppins Book Nook! This month’s theme was the great outdoors. I have to admit that it was hard to narrow things down, but thought I’d share some books on camping and hiking with kids as that is something our family enjoys. Camping and Hiking with Kids ~ How We Do It
I will admit that I am NOT a huge fan of tent camping. Besides the comfort factor (by which I mean not only sleeping on the ground, but the effects of cold and wet weather in Alaska), I had safety concerns as well (bears and moose are all around and I’ve had friends wake up to see moose legs alongside their tent.) So, my idea of camping right now is the RV we purchased last year when we traveled to see family in the lower 48.
When we lived in Ohio, my husband prepped the older boys for the camping experience by setting up a tent in the backyard. This was a perfect introduction for them as you had the safety net of the house. They are now perfectly comfortable going on outings like last week’s Boy Scout summer camp which was quite rainy and higher adventure trips like my eldest son’s trip to Aniakchak.

Hiking is sometimes an entire family venture, but there are times when my husband takes just the older boys to enjoy a more challenging trip. Babes love to be on dad’s back seeing things. But once they get to the stage of being too heavy to carry yet easily tired out when walking, you have to evaluate what the family hike looks like. Hence, our family hikes are short and the longer ones are off with just dad.

My daughter loves camping! It isn’t my favorite, but I do it for her!
I used to go camping all the time as a kid but now that I am a mother of six kids it is pretty hard to do it. We usually go out doors to my grandmothers ranch and shoot guns. Our kids love to shoot with us too!
I’ve never gone camping, but I really want to! There are tons of campstes where we live in FL.
We took our daughter camping in New Jersey a few weeks ago and we made so many awesome memories. We didnt do a lot of hiking because the bugs were unbearable.
We love to go hiking, but don’t really camp. We both would go when we were younger, but we’d rather doing some glamping now 🙂
I haven’t taken a realllllly long hike in a long time, but I used to go on those with my family and the reward at the end was a waterfall.
We haven’t taken our kids yet but I cannot imagine it these days taking them without electronics. I remember growing up and we could easily spend the weekend without the tv but nowadays I think they would revolt.

I’ve done the camping thing before, but admit I like my creature comforts now….especially a REAL bed.

My boys have all enjoyed their Cub Scouting experience. Some aspects were better than others, but overall it is a solid program for the boys. I hope Koko has a great time.
