Enjoying Advent and Christmas with Veggie Tales

For years, our family has enjoyed watching different Veggie Tales shows.  This includes the Christmas themed ones, which we thought we’d share more about today.

The Toy That Saved Christmas

This show was the first of the Christmas themed show they have produced and one of our favorites.  If you haven’t seen it yet, the premise is that the Buzz-Saw Louie doll is the HOT toy of the season with the company using advertising to create a frenzy of kids demanding one for their gift.  Then, one of the Buzz-Saw Louie dolls comes to life and ends up (with some help) spreading the message that there is more to Christmas than getting gifts.  For this one, the silly song is another favorite, Oh Santa!

The Star of Christmas

If you asked my boys, this would be their least favorite of the Veggie Tales Christmas shows.  Bob and Larry play the characters that need to learn a lesson this time with the setting of Victorian England.  They are producing a show that will push the envelope with the ambitious goal of many lights on the stage.  Hearing about the Star of Christmas, they decide they need that particular item to ensure their success.   Only, they learn that a physical item is NOT the true ‘star’ of the holiday.

Saint Nicholas: A Story of Joyful Giving

This is one that we pull out early in Advent and definitely watch to celebrate the Feast Day of Saint Nicholas.  This one is told in a style familiar in other Veggie Tales shows as Bob’s telling of a story to Junior and his friends ‘transports’ them to ancient times to meet the real Saint Nicholas.  Giving of self to help others is the theme and it is done wonderfully.

(The boys love to get J singing the silly song from this one, Doggies Need Donuts while a few times through that song has me wishing for another one.)

It’s a Meaningful Life

This is the only one we do not own yet.  From the title, most adults will get that this is a child’s telling of the holiday classic, It’s a Wonderful Life.  Only this time Larry is the guy who thinks his life lacks meaning when he’s on the verge of losing his father’s toy factory to a greedy businessman.  His character takes a ride on a train to see the past, present and future where he’ll discover just how meaningful his life truly is.

The Little Drummer Boy

The song for which this show is named is a favorite of my second son, R.  And, this particular show was so loved by J last year that in his desire to watch the show he broke the DVD.  Thankfully, I had an Amazon gift certificate that covered the cost of ordering a replacement copy as the boys were all sad about not being able to watch it.  The show has Junior, who loves to play his drum so much that he doesn’t hear his friends ring the doorbell, learning about another boys who loved to play his drum. 

Those of us who listened to the Veggie Tales Christmas album for years wishing there was video to go along with the songs had a moment to rejoice that the silly song on this show is “The 8 Polish Foods of Christmas”…. all that meat!
