Certain TV channels create quite a few each year that seem to be the same story with different names and settings. While I enjoy some of them, the same ‘recipe’ makes it less enticing over time.
I Heard the Bells will be on the BIG screen and gives you all the holiday feels without the cookie-cutter approach to the story.

Known as America’s Poet, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow leads an idyllic life…until the day his world is shattered by tragedy.
With a nation divided by Civil War and his family torn apart, Henry puts down his pen, silenced by grief.
But it’s the sound of Christmas morning that reignites the poet’s lost voice as he discovers the resounding hope of rekindled faith.
I Heard the Bells is in theaters starting December 1st.

Review of the Film
I won’t put this into my top 10 list of holiday films. But, it is a much better option in a sea of predictable options.
I Heard the Bells is the first feature-length film from Sight & Sound. Given what I experienced, I sure hope it is just the first of many.
Part of what really struck me about this film was how they wove together the known history of Longfellow with wonderful cinematography.
Anytime I watch something biographical in nature, I like to look up the history. The screenwriters did a fantastic job using parts of what is known from historical documents to bring the story to life.
The initial scenes show how much in love Longfellow was with his wife and how he adored his children. Semi-spoiler: bring tissues if needed for her tragic death. The loss becomes practically insurmountable to him with the lost ability to write.
Time marches on and soon his family is affected by the Civil War. It is through time in the Union Army that his son Charles finds the need for God and the hope He provides.
During Charles’ recovery at home, Longfellow finally finds his voice again and pens the now famous carol I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day.
