Remembering Saint Nicholas Today

Today is the Feast day for Saint Nicholas and in different parts of the world children are celebrating.
Our family did not have this as a special day when either Mr. O or I were growing up and we haven’t instituted it in our household either. Although there was one year when P asked if he’d find gifts in his shoe if he left them out. Apparently, one of the boys at his school that year did have a family that celebrated.
We used to own a short film about Saint Nicholas that the older boys and I watched in the past. However, I decided to part with the video when we were moving from Maryland to Alaska.
So, now I am searching for what to do with the boys tomorrow for some faith-building fun.
Thankfully, the Saint Nicholas Center has an abundance of ideas to help you celebrate this jovial Saint. I hadn’t been on their site in a while and am amazed at how it has grown. There’s even a section with music!
Come morning I’ll see exactly what I will do with the boys after we get some core school work completed. But, I will share what I am thinking about using.
To begin our school day, I think we’ll use the Simple St. Nicholas Name Day Liturgy.

I really have an itch for music to be part of it. They’ve taken the song Jolly Old Saint Nicholas and updated it to tell more of the religious connection. I’m thinking the Saint Nicholas Song is the one we’ll use. It will most likely be sung around lunch time when we are up in the main living space near my digital piano.
We’ll also read And Now We Call Him Santa Claus on the computer or maybe another one of the recommended stories.
For the younger boys, I may give them a coloring page or color and cut out play set from their printable St. Nicholas activity page.
For a special treat, we might find time to bake Speculatius (German Spice Cookies)as I believe all ingredients are in the house and the boys might really enjoy them. Otherwise, I might try theSaint Nicholas Gingerbread.
Overall, pretty simple and hopefully easy to implement. Next year I might plan ahead and have a group event using their lesson plan page to help plan it all.
**Edited** Catholic Culture also has a wealth of resources for St. Nicholas Day, too.
This post is being linked up to this week’s 40 Days of Seeking Him meme. I hope you will come back to share more during this season of Advent.

What wonderful ideas for celebrating St. Nicholas! I am going to incorporate these for sure in next year’s plans.
Thank you for visiting my blog and for your kind comments!
I purchased the candles at one of the St. Jude Shops in Philadelphia. I wonder if you can order from them online? I was so glad when I found them because my younger guys were still pretty little and it scared me about having lit candles around them, as well.
I look forward to reading your blog!
God bless,
Lisa
Love all of these ideas! I completely forgot today was St. Nicholas’ Day. We have built a stable during Advent in the past and have a special piece to add for St. Nicholas’ Day. It feels weird to not have all our stuff out and ready yet. We are doing our Jesse Tree, but it’s not being put up yet, just pulling out the ornaments.
Blessings,
Trish
