In many circles, I keep hearing how this country has strayed significantly from the ideals set forth with documents like The Declaration of Independence and The Constitution of the United States.  While I might agree with some of the arguments, finding a resource to educate MY boys about those documents and the ideals set forth upon our country’s founding has been a challenge.  The tide might have just turned with the introduction of What Would the Founding Fathers Think?

Premise of What Would the Founding Fathers Think?

If you look at the subtitle for this book: A Young American’s Guide to Understanding What Makes Our Nation Great and How We’ve Strayed, you’ll get a sense of what this title seeks to do.  American History, politics and government are all rolled into this book with a prime target audience of middle and high school students.

The Founding Fathers you’ll find in the title are Ben Franklin, George Washington and James Madison. These men travel in ‘ye olde time machine’ to the future and are dismayed by what they see has become to the country. Through online conversations (Share Knowledge with Young People Everywhere with the ability so they Can Have A Turn with questions) with the young generation, they engage in discussion about what principles and ideals our country was founded upon those two hundred plus years ago.

With wit, humor, and the occasional serious note, David Bowman brings the founding fathers back to life, showing how they might react to America’s current political pickle. By skillfully illustrating the problems our nation will face and presenting them in an interactive format, this book is bound to bring any teen into the political process. And it’s so much fun adults will want to read it too!

Our Thoughts about What Would the Founding Fathers Think?

I have to admit that I have found this title to be not only educational, but presented in such a manner to make the subject material fun to read.  No falling asleep while flipping pages like some of the textbooks I’ve read in high school and beyond.  And, the writing it easy enough to understand that even my 4th grader can gleen plenty from the book.

R was my primary ‘reviewer’ of this title and he’s really enjoyed it, including the copious illustrations.  When asked what he is learning from the book, he responded with “not much.”  However, that’s more a reflection of regular, lively conversations at the dinner table that have addressed many of the key points tackled by Mr. Bowman.

I wish books like this would make it in to the mainstream of education in our country.  But, I fear that they won’t.  So, it is up to parents to find great resources like this one and share them with their kids.  After all, they are the ones who will inherit the mess being created now.

  1. I dread to hear the language those founding fathers would use if they came back and saw what goes on now—I think I may buy this book not for any child-but for me!

  2. This could come in very handy, especially with our youngest who keeps coming up with the strangest scenarios and questions about why we have this government and how laws are made…

    1. I love how some homeschooled children can see things they might not consider if attending a school that ‘feeds’ them the information. Just wait until logic really kicks in! There are times that my teen blows me away with how astute he can be.

  3. very good review–my husband will be very interested in this read–he is always lamenting about how changed our country has become and not for the better in many cases-I have book marked for him to see–thanks for sharing
