TOS Crew Review – Math Tutor
I have been, or can be if you click on a link and make a purchase, compensated via a cash payment, gift, or something else of value for writing this post. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.
Growing up, I was probably the exception to the rule. I LOVED math class and found problem solving quite interesting. I even considered a second major in college for math, but wanted to finish in 4 years. Two of my boys have a head for math as well, while the other one suffers from both forgetfulness and carelessness as he tries to rush through and begin a new activity.
After receiving two of the DVD products from Math Tutor, we spent an afternoon of viewing to see what they might learn. We started with Basic Word Problem solving as it covered problems that were on the boys’ levels. Disc One covered addition, subtraction, multiplication and division problems with whole numbers. Disc 2 of the set includes working the same basic functions with decimals. This disc presented more new material for the boys as decimals have not really been covered in our regular math curriculum. P was quick to pick up on how to solve the problem and just needed to learn how to handle the decimals.
We found that fast forwarding through the long explanations of how to approach each problem on disc 1 was what worked best for them as they already got the concepts. I did really like the initial descriptions he has for each problem type to clue the student as to what key words would tell you how to work a problem. I guess the boys’ ability to quickly get the correct answer speaks to how well their math curriculum has taught them to tackle word problems.
The other product sent for evaluation was Algebra II. None of the boys are quite ready for this level, so I watched segments of the video myself. Like the other one, the problems are thoroughly presented so that the student can literally walk through the steps. While the boys might not be ready to tackle full blown algebra, I can see this being an extra resource in my house for when they start algebra. And, I can have fun working math problems a bit more complex than how much money someone needs to buy certain items.
I would consider these a good option for students that need more help understanding their math, especially if the parent is not very confident with their math skills. The ability to solve word problems is critical to success in many career paths later in life and it is far easier to learn this skill early. And, the lack of mastered basic math skills early on will impede success in later years. The cost of each DVD set (averaging $30 per set) is far less than hiring a math tutor would be for the same amount of time.
