Survival of the Smartest: The First 72 Hours written by Aaron Turpen pulls together all the disaster survival information you KNOW you should know.  Yet, how many of us are truly prepared for these catastrophic events.

SOTS_Book_Render-smallUp in Alaska, we are fortunate to have fewer natural disasters to fret over.  P rejoices on a regular basis that tornados just don’t happen in the Anchorage area.  (That was always his big stress item when we lived in Ohio.) But, we do have one potential natural disaster that can affect our lives… earthquakes!  While we have experienced smaller scale ones, there is precedent for a BIG one to hit and possibly leave everyone scrambling.

I appreciate this authors candor in stating that he is writing not as an ‘expert’ with initials behind his name, but rather as someone who grew up living the idea of being prepared.  This childhood training was in large part due to his parents LDS religion with a focus on being self-sufficient and prepared for a 72 hour survival period.  While this is the basis of his initial ‘training’ in emergency preparedness, it is not the driving force behind his chosen paths.

With an appreciation for some adults attention spans to be short (and our lives busy enough that reading a modest 49 page ebook might be too much to do at once), Mr. Turpen has his first chapter cover the most important information in a quick summary style.  While it will give you a heads up of what needs to happen for you to be prepared, you’ll want to eventually take the time to read the other chapters on how to really enact those steps.

I won’t go into specifics, but will share the key areas covered in this text.

  • Keeping Your Head During Emergency
    Situations
  • Making a Disaster Supply Kit
  • Shutting Off Utilities In An Emergency
  • Dealing With An Evacuation
  • Specific Disaster Situations (e.g. natural disasters or a nuclear event.)

In some areas, our family is already prepared.  We have been moving towards being more self-sufficient with an eye on what we’d do if the power or natural gas went out.  (This fall we’ll be purchasing at least a cord of wood for the wood stove insert so we can have heat.  And, we have a small generator that can operate a few systems in the house…especially the fridge and water pump!)  But, one thing I have not done is to make up a true 72 hour kit that can be readily accessed when needed.  That’ll go onto our family to do list with the older boys leading that project.  They are, after all, Boy Scouts who need to be prepared.

Having worked for the American Red Cross in a variety of capacities, I can say that much of the information in this text is available through other sources.  However, it is easier for me to lose all those pamphlets compared to an electronic file sitting on my computer just waiting for me to look it over.  So, whether you’d choose to pay for someone doing the leg work for you is a personal decision.

  1. Thanks a ton for the great review, Laura. Your young Boy Scouts are currently in the middle of one the best experiences of their lives. As an Eagle Scout, I can tell you that they'll learn more and gain more from their time in the BSA than they will from almost any other social activity they undertake at this age.

  2. Very important topic — having it all in one spot increases the likelihood that we'll actually follow the steps. In our area there have been several major – ice storms (no power for 10 days), hurricanes (ditto), and hurricane spawned 16 day regional flood (no power – evacuations AND an entire city that ran out of food, gasoline etc). The main societal problems were caused by the vast number of people who took NO preparedness steps at all — NO water, NO canned food!
