Super Easy Whipped Mint Frosting
Using a few ingredients, you can create a whipped mint frosting to use on cakes or brownies.
For putting together my Spring Cake Using Sweetworks Candies, I decided to make a frosting that the boys would love.
This is super easy to make and the end result is nothing short of addicting.
Here’s how to make whipped mint frosting in your home with just a few ingredients.

If you want a super stiff frosting for your cake, this is NOT it.
But, you can still have the mint flavor just by leaving out the whipped cream / whipped topping.
If you want the flavor, but not a minty green color, then leave out the food coloring.
Super Easy Whipped Mint Frosting
Make your own whipped mint frosting at home with 3 (or 4) ingredients.
Ingredients
- 1 container of Vanilla Frosting or an equivalent amount of homemade frosting
- 1 container of whipped dairy free topping (freezer section) OR an equivalent amount of homemade whipped cream
- 2 to 3 drops of Peppermint essential oil OR enough Peppermint extract to taste
- several drops of green food coloring
Instructions
- If using fresh whipped cream, beat together with a small amount of sugar to taste. Stop the whisk/beaters once firm peaks have formed.
- In a mixing bowl, add the vanilla frosting and drops of green food coloring.
- Stir until you have the depth of color you desire.
- Using a low setting for a hand mixer, whip together colored frosting, whipped cream (or CoolWhip), and peppermint extract.
- Once blended, taste for peppermint flavor. Add more extract if desired.
Notes
If you are going to use essential oil, make sure that the brand is labeled safe for consumption. I personally use Young Living as my source and found that 3 drops gave a strong flavoring to the icing.
Peppermint extract is not as concentrated as an essential oil. Start with a small amount (1/4 tsp.) and add more as desired.
What is a favorite icing for cake in your house?

I tried this recipe and as soon as I added the homemade whipped cream to the icing mixture, the dye and peppermint flavor separated, causing the mixture to be half liquid and half icing. A waste of money and of time. Very disappointed.
MMM, I bet this would be amazing on a chocolate cake!
This looks really good. I make a homemade frosting but it comes out too sweet. I am going to try this!!
I absolutely LOVE frosting!!!! I have even had a “frosting melt-down” once! 😉 This recipe looks fantastic!
I forget about adding flavoring to plain frosting. I should do with a Butter Rum flavoring I have.
Thank you very much for the recipe. And thank you for the entry.
I love mint and I’d like to top this on chocolate cupcakes. I don’t eat it very often but buttercream is my favorite frosting.
Wow, now that’s what I call a quick recipe! I have a cupcake recipe that this would be perfect for. Thanks for sharing!
I love the flavor of mint and the whipped cream along with the frosting sounds delicious!
I love chocolate frosting!!! This sounds so easy and delicious to make for St Patrick’s day!
I like the idea of adding a whipped topping to the frosting. Your cake is very pretty, and the colors are perfect for spring.
I am turning everything green for St. Pattys and mint is high on the menu, I jut love this simple tip! I might do this for my Thin Mint cupcakes on Monday!
This has to be the easiest frosting recipe I’ve ever seen. I can’t wait to give it a try. I LOVE mint frosting!
My favorite icing is cream cheese frosting 🙂
I love cream cheese frosting, too. I want to learn how to make it myself and then use some with apricot or strawberry jam whipped into it for a layer between cake layers.
