I like to consider myself a strategic shopper, even if it is more challenging to do up here in Alaska. This is especially true with four growing boys in the house and typically a single income to cover everything. My Thoughts on Strategic Shopping
Overall, I found the books to be a great resource. I’ve spent years learning to live frugally and find ways to shop strategically so that I could stretch our budget. Moving to Alaska really threw a wrench in my ‘game’ as the pricing is typically higher for products and coupons can be scarce through local venues. That just gets me thinking a bit more outside of the box.
While I am not a novice strategic shopper, the books still had a sections that either reminded me of something I used to do or gave me new food for thought.
Reading the first few parts of the Christmas book, I could see that Candy and I think a lot alike about shopping ahead when you can find things on sale. A week after Christmas I was picking up marked down Christmas items at the store and already have one local individual’s gift purchased for this year. Not only is it done, but with items at 70% off, I could put together a small bundle of things for them rather than getting just one item. She takes your through month by month so that by doing a little shopping here and there during the year you won’t have bills you’d rather hide from come January. (There’s even mention of Swagbucks to help earn Amazon gift cards, something I do as well.)
In the Strategic Shopping Book, I loved how Candy separated out the chapters so that some cover specific stores (e.g. Walgreens and Rite Aid) and others cover particular topics (e.g. debunking coupon myths.) While a fair bit of the book does tackle the use (and storage) of coupons, she also mentions different discounts (e.g. military) that people should be aware of before visiting their local store. Also, I enjoyed the reminder that we should build pantries in our home for the purpose of ministering to our family and possibly others in our community.

I used to be so good at stretching my food budget. I would coupon and cook a bunch, etc. I need to get back into saving as food is the biggest budget breaker, In my experience.
