Science in the Library ~ Odd-Toed Hoofed Animals

Odd-Toed Hoofed Animals (also known as ungulates with an odd number of toes) was the theme for the first session in March. R was happy to have a few kids closer to his age in the group (all because it was during the public school’s spring break.)
The kids started off by sorting a deck of animal cards any way they felt like (similar size, similar appearance, etc.) Odd-toed ungulates include horses and rhinoceroses.
Then they played a few card games, including a memory match up, with the cards.
But, the most fun part of the session was getting to ‘be’ an odd toed hooved animal OR the predator. Food was placed in a confined space and they had to eat as much as they could without being caught. The predator just needed to swipe part of their paper tail. Who ever was ‘eaten’ got to be the predator the next go around.
I missed seeing all the different card games, though, as Little J kept going in and out of the room. All the activity plus tons of books was more than he could pass up!

I totally forgot horses had odd number of toes. It's so easy to forget with their hooves.I've seen a variety on the predator prey game they played, but that variety looks very fun too.
You have the coolest library!! I guess we are studying an "Odd-toed ungulate" next as we are studying horses!
