Review ~ LEGO Creationary:Modern Day Pictionary?

When we were asked if our family would be interested in reviewing the new LEGO game, Creationary, I knew what the boys’ response would be even before I asked them. A resounding YES! came from P, R and D. We’ll just say that these boys love LEGOS.
They eagerly anticipated the game’s arrival at my parents’ house in Louisiana. Having something fun to do while visiting Nana and Papa is why it came here instead of our home in Alaska. From it’s arrival, Creationary has seen use practically every day.
There are different suggestions for how to play. My guys have taken just one route….one person builds while the others guess.
I have to say that this game reminds me very much of Pictionary. When it is your turn, you roll the die to see which option on the card you draw will be built. Each card has 4 categories: vehicles, buildings, nature or things. There are three different levels of difficulty for the cards. P tried doing a few from the highest level of difficulty and found it near impossible to build something that his younger brothers could recognize. For me, that’s a good thing as the tougher cards can be saved for when the other boys are a bit older.

Now there were two possible ‘negatives’ for this product. First off is that while it comes with over 300 pieces of LEGOS, there were some challenging items that P and my nephew, D, had a hard time building without mixing colors. Secondly, a child that has a hard time envisioning how to construct something might be frustrated that there are no directions on how to build the LEGO version of the item. Neither one of those ‘negatives’ would keep me from recommending this product for families with LEGO lovers. My bigger challenge will be keeping the Creationary pieces in the box and not in the LEGO tub the boys have in the house.

Great review! We bought the Lego Harry Potter game and we all love it. We almost got this one but it was 2 against 1. May get this one for Christmas!
We've already had a few pieces migrate to a Lego bin. I had to rescue them and put them back with the game. lol!My daughter thought it would be fun to grab a bin of Legos and play the game with them. I told her that one of the challenges of the game was to have limited pieces. 😉

We have that game too, and I agree–just like pictionary!I like that some of the pictures are hard, makes Quint have to think. He is such a follower of LEGO directions.
Wow! This game looks great for my 12 year old son. I only wonder whether it would prove too easy for him. Since he was 4 or 5 he has been able to take Lego catalogs and figure out how to build anything he liked, even if he sometimes had to substitute colors. Heather ~ I know you've got a TON of LEGOS in the house. I suspect that Ella would love the structure this game provides. It could make a great game to share at a homeschool game afternoon (if they are still doing those at the Elkton library this year.)Lori ~ I'll try to remember to share an update on how they are enjoying Creationary down the road. I'm thinking with a return of workboxes in our homeschool coming soon it might be a box for the boys to do (and take a break from more intense work.)
Thanks for the review! I have wondered "what this game is all about". My boys love Legos, but I am not entirely sure that they would love a structured game. I'd love to hear from you again whether this game gets a lot of use from your boys.
