Netflix Just for Kids for Safe Family Viewing #NetflixKids

I have been, or can be if you click on a link and make a purchase, compensated via a cash payment, gift, or something else of value for writing this post. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.

This sponsored post on Netflix Just For Kids is written by me on behalf of Netflix.  All opinions are still my own.

When we lived in Maryland and then here in Alaska, we’ve had a subscription to Netflix for portions of the year.  Being able to pick what you want to watch when you want to watch it is something we value.  And, now that we’ve ditched cable, we were in the market for a video streaming option.  Netflix was my go to source for our family.

Right before I had suspended our subscription to Netflix last year, I noticed they had added a tab titled Just For Kids. I didn’t really explore it much at that time.  However, since reactivating our subscription, I have been really checking it out.

Netflix’s Just for Kids has family friendly shows (both movies and TV) which are appropriate for children ages 2- 12.  With the help of Common Sense Media,  this dedicated kids section provides ratings, reviews and information that enable parents to make the best choice for their family.  Along the top, you will see favorite characters like Curious George or Elmo.  Selecting that character will bring you to their ‘collection’.  Or, you can scroll down to see by type of show or even popularity of the movies.

While there are not too many shows on cable that our family misses, J was already begging some days to watch an episode of Caillou.  He’d been spoiled by having at least 3 or 4 on demand with our cable provider.  Now, with Netflix, he has a ton to pick from for this particular series.

This past weekend, the boys voted on a show to watch from the options on Netflix.  Curious George 2 won the honor of being streamed on my laptop which was connected to our TV so all could see.

When the movie concluded, the closing credits ran in the upper left hand corner.  This allows for Netflix to suggest other shows you would most likely enjoy based on the selection you just watched.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that you can take Netflix ‘on the road’ or should I say ‘off the computer’ with apps for handheld devices like the iPad and Kindle Fire as well as gaming systems like the Wii.  (It wasn’t until after Curious George was over that I remembered we used to stream Netflix through the Wii.)  I’ll be interested to see if we can stream on the iPad the next time we are at a RV park with Wi Fi.

Already, the voting is on for selecting the next feature length show to watch.  I’ve been pushing ParaNorman, although the boys are thinking there are other options they’d rather watch first.  At least one boy has his eye on Tron: Uprising as he loved the Tron movies.  With so many options available on Netflix from Hasbro, Disney Jr. and Cartoon Network, it might be a while before we run out of choices.  And the next time my 3 year old starts to melt down because he wants to watch Caillou, I have a solution at my fingertips.

What are you watching on TV with your family? Netflix has family favorites from Disney, Disney Jr., Hasbro, Cartoon Network and Dreamworks that are available to stream anytime, anywhere.

And streaming is easier than you think! Download the free app on your iPad, click on the Netflix app on any gaming device, go to the website on your computer – and you’re in business. Check it out here!

  1. The “Just for Kids” option is such a great tool for moms. I love knowing that the programs have been somewhat screened out. At least I don’t worry about my babies’ innocent eyes seeing inappropriate images on the search page!

  2. We watch Netflix every day in our home. I love that they have a separate kids app that keeps all the unwanted content out of little hands!

  3. We love the kid’s tab on Netflix! Both my boys beg to get to choose shows from it! I have it on all our devices and definately get our money’s worth each month!

    1. That’s awesome, Jeannette! I don’t think I’ll even feel like we fully got our money’s worth every month as we have to watch how much we watch. But, it is definitely less expensive than renting at the video store.

  4. We love Netflix! It’s installed on all our phones, tablets and smart tv. I love that it’s portable so my toddler can easily be kept entertained while I’m at the Dr with the baby, the soccer field watching my older girls, sitting in the cart while I grab groceries or just at home during quiet time. We considered getting rid of the satellite dish on the farm but there are still a few current series that we enjoy watching. (Cdn Netflix; I’ve heard US is better even)

  5. we love netflix!!! The kids just came inside for some down time and they are watching Netflix kids right as we speak! I love the variety of kid friendly shows for them that are age appropriate!

    1. I agree that there are a TON of choices which are family friendly on Netflix, Amber. And, you don’t have to return them to a store or library when you are done. (No late fees!)

  6. I will keep saying it, this looks like a great laternative to my son watching Hulu at the in-laws, I need to control his viewing beter with this tool!
    thanks,
    Mitch

    1. We haven’t used Hulu as most of what we’d want to watch requires a subscription. And, like you mention there’s a lot my teenager could find to watch that I don’t want to have in the house.
