Natural Remedies for Seasonal Congestion
I have been, or can be if you click on a link and make a purchase, compensated via a cash payment, gift, or something else of value for writing this post. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.
This post on Natural Remedies for Seasonal Congestion was written as part of a campaign on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for Zarbee’s Naturals. I received a promotional item and a product sample as a thank you for participating.
Spring is here and with it comes a surge of environmental triggers that can leave many people suffering from seasonal congestion. Here in Alaska, we have a more unique issue…breakup! When the snow and ice all melts, the roads are left covered in the gravel used in lieu of salt during the winter. Even people who do not react to the typical triggers find symptoms in full force as dust clouds are tossed into the air when the gravel is pulverized. I love having natural remedies for seasonal congestion on hand when things strike.
Easy Natural Remedies for Seasonal Congestion
Sometimes the simplest steps can have a profound effect on your body. Here are five things our family does to minimize a response from your immune system.
1. Avoid sources that trigger your body’s immune system, as much as possible. This is something easier said than done on occasion, especially if you want to be outside enjoying the sunshine. When flowers and trees are in bloom, consider minimizing time outdoors and keep windows closed. I have to confess, though, that there are days when I want to dress like this:
2. Remove substances that trigger a reaction from your body. After being in an environment rich in triggers, remove your clothing to be laundered and take a quick shower. It is amazing how much of a difference this can make! Also, taking all coats and shoes off at the door will help minimize the spread of those substances through the house.
3. Stay on top of housework. Okay, if you are like me, cleaning the house isn’t always a super top priority. Yet, making sure to dust and keep the floors clean (ideally with a great microfiber cloth that traps the debris) goes a long way to create a haven from seasonal triggers. We removed carpeting in our main living space and master bedroom which has had a profound effect on our body’s response. Don’t forget to keep your vehicle clean, too!
4. Use good nutrition and hydration to alleviate symptoms. I have found that if I have a well balanced diet and consume at least half my body weight in water (e.g. 60 ounces if you weigh 120 lbs.), then my symptoms are more manageable. Drinking hot tea with a little honey or lemon essential oil helps a lot with phlegm build up.
5. Find ways to support your immune system to better handle exposure to trigger substances. Many of my friends are embracing essential oils and natural supplements, like Zarbee’s Seasonal Relief, when seeking relief from congestion that follows heightened immune responses. I just had a box of Zarbee’s Seasonal Relief arrive at the house and I’m eager to try this new solution which promises to help combat general congestion. It’s made from the extract of Butterbur, a plant used for centuries in Europe, but less so in the U.S.

While there are still times when my immune system is so heightened that you’ll find me reaching for over the counter medication, I really do try to alleviate my symptoms naturally. Zarbee’s Seasonal Relief is appealing to me as there are no nasty side effects like drowsiness or getting the jitters like some chemical based products can do.
Butterbur is a plant which grows wild along rivers, ditches and marshes worldwide, with Zarbee’s Naturals harvesting theirs from farms in Germany. Its sparse, red flowers shoot up in early spring, followed by huge, heart-shaped leaves. Europeans have used it for years to find relief and clinical studies have shown Butterbur to effectively combat congestion. Something that can support my respiratory health sounds great to me.
You can find Zarbee’s Seasonal Relief over the counter at CVS and Target and is intended for children 12 years of age and over. Zarbee’s Naturals is a dietary supplement. Any statements made here have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

I have found that the best way to deal with it is to dust and vacuum often, just as you said! Keeping your indoor environment clean (especially where you sleep!) is the most control that you have over it. During bad times, I wash sheets and pillowcases once per week and make sure that I always have dust protectors over the pillows themselves.
Also, I just got a Norwex cloth – I noticed that your dust mitt is from them! Will be trying that brand out to see 🙂
Michelle,
I LOVE Norwex (and sell it!) The pollen count is sky high here right now (as in close to 3000 when anything over 100 is considered high.) So, I’m thinking about doing sheets today and another run through the house with my Norwex mop system to get as much stuff out of the house as possible.
I am so glad you touched on good nutrition and hydration. That is so often missed when discussing seasonal allergies.
