Hiking to Thunderbird Falls

We’d been hearing from multiple friends up here that we needed to have a trip one day to hike to Thunderbird Falls. So, on a mostly overcast and slightly drizzly day, we drove up to that section of the Chugach State Park and made the hike to the viewing deck.
Let me preface by saying that while the sign says it is a hike for ALL ages….well, the initial part of the trail is what I’d consider a good incline. As I was battling congestion left behind an allergy flare-up, it was downright challenging for me to do this.
Hiking along the path had me seeing the leaves changing and thoughts of cold weather coming soon had me a bit sad.
Plenty of signs were placed along the path warning of the steep cliffs and danger of bodily harm.
Considering how muddy the trail was, I wouldn’t want to risk falling just to get a better view of the gorge.
After a mile of hiking, we reached the viewing deck for the waterfall.
We then followed a side trail that provided access to the creekside. 
I wish I had worn actual hiking boots as the trail was quite muddy and downright wet in some areas. The boys want to go back with wading boots to get closer to the bottom of the waterfall.

Though you're wearing jackets in your pictures, here in Alabama we're still sweating in our t-shirts! We're waiting for that perfect fall weather before we hit the trails a bit more frequently. O I could just cry…we spent so much time at thunderbird falls and absolutely loved it! In the winter, the muddy path will turn to pure ice, so wearing clips is a must, but the falls will freeze too and the creek leading up to it…it really is amazing and freezes pretty solid so you can actually climb the falls! It reall is a neat thin to see…even if you don't want to climb the ice! 🙂 Thanks so much for sharing these pictures.
