About The Hill (2023 film)

Growing up impoverished in small-town Texas, young Rickey Hill shows an extraordinary ability to hit a baseball, despite being burdened by leg braces from a degenerative spinal disease.

His concerned pastor father (DENNIS QUAID) discourages Rickey from playing baseball to protect him from injury, and to have him follow in his footsteps and become a preacher.

As a young man, Rickey (COLIN FORD) becomes a baseball phenomenon.

His desire to participate in a try-out for a legendary major league scout divides the family and threatens Rickey’s dream of playing professional baseball.

Based on a true story, THE HILL is directed by Jeff Celentano and also stars JOELLE CARTER, country music singer and songwriter RANDY HOUSER, Golden Globe nominee BONNIE BEDELIA, and SCOTT GLENN.

The Hill launches in theaters on August 25, 2023.

Short Review of The Hill

I’ll start by saying watching The Hill definitely stirred plenty of emotions in me.

I felt sad for young Ricky to have not only the physical challenge of his legs but also the lack of belief and support from his father.

I also felt hope and joy when Ricky would defy the odds and surprise others with his ability.

Throughout the film, you can see how important faith is for the Hill family. Patriarch James Hill is a preacher and you see him in action more than once. Young Ricky is also quick to quote Scripture or key teachings from his father.

You also learn how much he adores baseball as he spends hours hitting rocks in the church yard or near by field. One of his afternoon hitting sessions had a rock go over trees and land on a man’s (Ray) truck windshield. Ray calls him a prodigy after he does it a second time.

A good portion of the film focuses on the time surrounding the family’s move to a new town and Ricky’s eventual shedding of leg braces.

One moment that really stood out to me is when he tells his father that he was blessed with two gifts from God: preaching and hitting (playing baseball.) It had to be incredibly hard to stand with convection and tell his father that he could be on fire for the Lord but still have incredible talent.

A jump to the end of his high school baseball career shows how exceptional Ricky was as a player. After years of playing, his father still shunned that side of his life. It isn’t until Ricky is in the role of designated hitter for both teams at a Texas exhibition game that his father finally comes to see him play.

There are more twists and turns I don’t mention. The story of Ricky Hill and his journey to eventually play professional baseball becomes a backdrop for the viewer to consider not only what they would do to make a dream come true, but how faith in God can play into it. Because as James Hill pontificates in a sermon, sometimes we get caught up in our own plan versus God’s plan.
