Decadent Tuxedo Cookie Bars for the Holidays

When it comes to the holidays, I love to bake.
Not only do I love to bake, but my boys love to eat what I bake.

While there are some items that almost always get made, I like to pick a new recipe to try each year.
For this season, I opted to make a batch of decadent tuxedo cookie bars.

Dollar General has everything I need for holiday baking.

Although there are no Dollar General stores in Alaska, there are in places we’ve lived and where family members still are.

So, a recent trip to my parents in Louisiana meant I could visit the local Dollar General for some basic needs. My boys are always in shock when we go shopping down here as the price points and options are SO much better than Alaska.

What did I find on sale to help with my baking needs?

Originally, I was dreaming up ways to use the NESTLÉ® Stand Up Bags in my baking. I could add the Butterfinger pieces to a brownie mix.

Or, maybe transform ordinary oatmeal raising cookies.

Either choice would make the ordinary more extraordinary. However, my boys wanted to enjoy them straight up.

While this is not a complicated recipe, it does take a little bit of time. However, the final result makes it all worthwhile.

I always gather my ingredients before beginning.

The chemist in me knows that when baking a long delay can sometimes yield less than desirable results.

Having everything handy just makes it work better.

For melting chocolate chips with a stick of butter, I elected to use a double boiler on the stove.

You could try melting in the microwave or in a saucepan. However, I find the double boiler just works better.

Once the bars are done baking, you need to let them cool completely before slicing.

Granted, it is hard to not cut into them when they smell incredible. They do need to be cold to retain shape completely.

Here it is!  I hope you and your family enjoy them.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 stick (1/2 cup) of SALTED butter
  • 1 1/4 cups sugar
  • 18 ounces of chocolate chips in total (about 3 cups)
  • 1 Tbsp. vanilla extract
  • 4 Tbsp. hot water
  • 4 large eggs
  • 6 ounces white chocolate chips (about 1 cup)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 325 degrees.
  2. Either grease or line a 9 X 13 baking pan.
  3. Using a wisk, combine the flour and baking soda in a bowl and set aside.
  4. In a small saucepan or double boiler on low heat, melt the butter and 2 cups of the semisweet chocolate chips. Stir often until smooth.
  5. In a large mixing bowl (or the bowl of a stand mixer), beat the chocolate mixture with the sugar until it is well blended and smooth. This will take about 5 minutes with a hand mixer and less with a stand mixer.
  6. Without turning the mixer off, slowly add the vanilla followed by the water.
  7. Turn off the mixer and scrape down the sides of the bowl. Add the eggs, one at a time, mixing well.
  8. On a low speed, gradually add the flour mixture one large spoonful at a time.
  9. Finally, add in the remaining chocolate chips and the white chocolate chips. Blend long enough to evenly distribute the chips.
  10. Spread the batter into your prepared baking pan. It will be thick and you'll need to scrape the sides of the bowl to get it all out.
  11. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center is just slightly moist.
  12. Cool to room temperature before cutting into 18 pieces.
