The goal here is renewal, not more to-dos.

Building a Faith Foundation

Jesus gives us a clear invitation in Matthew 11:28: “Come to me all who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest.”

This is not a suggestion. It is the way back to peace when life feels heavy.

We try to rest without resting in Him.

We think we know better than the One who made us, and we push ahead instead of letting Him lead.

Carrie Underwood’s “Jesus, Take the Wheel” was incredibly popular years ago. There is a reason this song hit so many hearts.

The chorus says, “Jesus, take the wheel. Take it from my hands because I can’t do this on my own. I’m letting go. So give me one more chance. Save me from this road I’m on. Jesus, take the wheel.”

It is a picture of surrender in a scary moment.

Parenting can feel like sliding on ice.

Many of us try to set the course, ignore the Holy Spirit’s nudges, then ask God where He was when things fell apart.

When life derails, we often ask why God allowed it. Many times, the honest answer is that we were trying to fix everything ourselves.

Renewal starts with admitting our limits and letting Him refill what we have poured out.

  • Ignoring God’s nudges
  • Wondering why hard things happen
  • Learning to let Him refill us

Why We Get Drained and How to Refresh

So how do you refresh your soul when you’re drained?

Here are three simple ways to bring your heart back to center: 1) pray before reacting, 2) simplify your expectations, 3) build rest into your rhythm.

First Way: Pray Before Reacting

It is hard to pause in the heat of the moment. We can take things personally, feel our egos flare up, and snap before we even think.

Try this five-second practice before you respond: “Lord, help me respond with grace.” Whisper it. Breathe. Then speak.

That short prayer shifts the tone. It protects fragile egos, invites gentleness, and makes space for peace to guide your words.

Second Way: Simplify Your Expectations

Start letting go of all the things.

You do not have to do everything today.

Ask, what matters most right now for your family’s peace and faith?

We can have many good things in life, but not at the same time. Let go of what does not serve your home’s calm or your walk with God.

When my boys were little, my goals were simple: clean clothes, fed bellies, everyone knew they were loved, and nothing growing in the fridge that shouldn’t be.

Some days, that is still success.

Name what matters, then release the rest.

Third Way: Build Rest into Your Rhythm

Sleep matters, but true rest is also about stillness. Create a small pocket in your day for quiet prayer, journaling, or mindful breathing.

A short walk in nature lifts the mood and points your heart back to God. Sun on your face, fresh air in your lungs, and a simple prayer: “God, thank you so much for all that there is.”

Couple walks on boardwalk at beach. Setting sun on left with palm trees and sand. Buildings on right.

Put renewal on the calendar, not just chores and activities.

Try:

  • Quiet prayer
  • Journaling
  • Nature walks

Encouragement: You’re Not Failing

You are not failing when you are tired, you are human.

Even Jesus withdrew to pray.

When you choose rest, you are following His example, not falling behind.

The world says go faster.
Scripture says come and rest.

Treat rest as worship, a gift you receive and a posture you choose.
