Celebrating Halloween

Our new neighborhood held their annual Halloween party for the little kids plus trick-or-treating last night. It was an interesting afternoon and evening. We returned from mid-day errands to find the power out. So, the rainy weather plus lack of electricity had the kids’ party shortened to an hour instead of the scheduled two hours. So many cute costumes were there. My favorite homemade one was a tree. After eating some Popeye’s fried chicken we’d picked up while running those errands, the boys and I did our best to stay semi-dry while trick-or-treating around part of the neighborhood. I had suggested that I drive them, but they wanted to be purists. For a while, we were the only ones walking while others drove by in minivans, etc. Once the rain slowed down, the older kids started cruising through the streets (on their feet.) Several homes had generators running so they had a few lights available. Others sat in their garages or on porches to attract attention. After 75 minutes, the boys decided they were done. Amazingly, our lantern to ‘mark’ the house was passed over by several kids visiting another house on the street. Guess that just means I have more chocolate in the house :o)

This afternoon, the boys carved pumpkins with Stephen. It’s the first time in many years since we’ve done this and they really enjoyed the experience. The seeds are now soaking for roasting tomorrow. And, the boys’ creations are on the top deck with tea lights blazing for the moment. Any other deck or outside location for placement would mean a ‘dead’ pumpkin as we have quite a few deer cruising through the yard most nights.
