January tends to be a month with an incredible feeling of let down after the holidays have past.  Add in the long dark days of winter and a bit of cabin fever and I’m always eager for something to boost my spirits.

A Mile in His Shoes does a fantastic job at that!

This is the story of a young man, Mickey, with Asperger’s syndrome that is discovered by a minor league baseball coach, Murph, through a ‘chance’ meeting when Murph’s car has problems.  Mickey has an incredible pitcher’s arm and through some persuasion, Murph is able to secure him for the baseball team.  Not everyone on the team is welcoming of Mickey, but in the end he has a positive effect upon many of his teammates as well as for the team’s success.

The older boys were not too sure how they’d like this film.  None of the boys are really into team sports and sometimes wonder (aloud) why so many motivational movies pick a sport to run as a driving thread.

However, they became hooked and truly enjoyed the film.  Even my “reluctant to watch anything I deem good” 8 year old ended up snuggling up with a blanket to watch with us.  Witnessing how someone could act out in jealousy and hurt another prompted a bit of discussion as well.  For me, I appreciated how the story also showed how God can place people and situations in our life that help us to grow in ways we might not have imagined possible.

A Mile in His Shoes originally aired on GMC and was just released on DVD.  It retails for $14.93, but can be found at a discount at some retailers like Amazon.

Check out this short trailer and see if this film might be a good fit for your family.

  1. I know I will love this. I had so mush interaction with kids with disabilities that I love to see them succeed and how they overcome things so small is a miracle and then stories like this are wonderful! Rita

  2. Oops, I posted this on the wrong page, but hopefully this is the correct page. I mentioned to someone earlier that this movie makes me think of Adam Sandler’s “Waterboy” but with the heart of Cuba Gooding, Jr.’s “Radio.” I very much look forward to seeing it!

  3. Would love to win this. I enjoy movies that show others with disabilities that are able to show others that their disability is actually an ability. Our youngest was born with physical issues and I love to show her movies like this because I want nothing to stop her dreams.

    1. Tracy,

I thought they did a wonderful job showing that the young man had limitations because of his disability. But, then again, don’t we all have strengths and weaknesses that get in the way at times?

  4. I was so bummed that we missed it when it was on GMC!! That’s what I get for taping things and not getting to watch them for weeks!! I think this would be a great movie for my husband to watch. He’s having a rough time at work and could use a good pick me up movie! 🙂

    1. I hadn’t even heard about GMC until around Thanksgiving this year. I am now trying to find their other movies on DVD to watch (one is on instant streaming on Netflix right now!) Watched The Heart of Christmas that I recorded before Christmas. That was a very powerful film (although not the same kind of lifting up as A Mile in His Shoes is.)
