For most Roman Catholic children, second grade is an exciting year.  They are finally considered at the age of reason by the Church. This means they can receive two Sacraments for the first time ~ First Reconciliation and First Communion.

By far, I think most kids focus upon making their First Communion more than the reconciliation which proceeds it.  Although, some do like the idea of cleaning their hearts through confession before receiving Christ in the Eucharist.

There are many different options for ways to prepare your child for the Sacraments. However, there are not many in storybook formats. Specifically, a story that shows another child excited about this big step in the journey of growing up.

An upside for the story format is their ability to better visualize the Sacrament of the Eucharist as fitting in their life. So many times we can see that Christ used stories to convey his messages to the people. Stories engage us in a way just being told a fact does not do.

About A Little Guide to First Communion

A Little Guide to First CommunionA Little Guide to First Communion by Tracy Young captures a bit of the experience of one little girl as she prepares to receive her First Communion.
First Communion is an important experience for a Roman Catholic child. This delightfully illustrated book gives children a preview of what’s involved and provides parents with helpful tips for the occasion. It’s a wonderful gift for first communion.

Seraphina expresses a bit of concern about reconciliation, yet is also excited about making her First Communion.  Her mother is also shown as supportive of her throughout the process.

About the Author:

Tracy Young is President and self-proclaimed “Chief Princess” of A Little Indulgence. She founded the company in 2006, after discovering a need for timeless and age appropriate children’s special occasion dresses. Tracy developed a line of communion dresses when a customer requested a white party dress for her daughter’s upcoming First Communion. A line of communion veils and dress shoes soon followed.

Tracy decided to write a series of children’s book as a way to share her knowledge and familiarize children with different special occasions. “A Little Guide to First Communion” is Tracy’s second book.

Our Thoughts on A Little Guide to First Communion

Unlike little boys, girls preparing for this day often have a focus on their dress to best express how special a day it will be.

Ms. Young spends a portion of time sharing about the different choices for dresses, head wear, and accessories that they might want to carry.  You can tell she knows what she is talking about as her primary business, A Little Indulgence, is to give little girls the perfect outfit for their special day (whether for First Communion, being a flower girl or their Bat Mitzvah.)

There is also a nice overview of the Sacrament and how it is celebrated in different Christian churches.  While it does not provide nearly as much detail as a good catechism, any child hearing or reading this book will get the basic idea in short order.

Although this title might appeal to girls more than boys, I believe that we will enjoy reading this title with J as he grows and begins to anticipate joining his big brothers in receiving the Eucharist at Mass.  He’s already acutely aware of it being something set aside for people older than him. Although, as a toddler, he battles understanding why he can’t receive Jesus like everyone else in his family.

A Little Guide to First Communion is available in paperback and ebook format.

  1. We are not there yet, but we will be soon enough! My daughter will be the first of my children to go through this. As a Catholic Convert I am a little lost about how to work on this, prepare for this. Looks like a great book, one I will be hoping to use as we get closer!
