About American Underdog
American Underdog tells the inspirational true story of Kurt Warner (Zachary Levi from Shazam), who went from a stockboy at a grocery store to a two-time NFL MVP, Super Bowl champion, and Hall of Fame quarterback.
The film centers on Warner’s unique story and years of challenges and setbacks that could have
derailed his aspirations to become an NFL player – but just when his dreams seemed all but out of reach, it is only with the support of his wife, Brenda (Anna Paquin) and the encouragement of his family, coaches, and teammates that Warner perseveres and finds the strength to show the world the champion that he already is.
American Underdog is an uplifting story that demonstrates that anything is possible when you
have faith, family and determination.
This film opens nationwide on Christmas Day. Buy your tickets today!
My Thoughts on the Film
I’ll start by saying that many of the themes of this film are not unique.
There are other films that show someone overcoming adversity.
Films that have sports at the center with the need to work together.
Stories about a child growing up without a parent.
American Underdog has all that.
Kurt Warner’s dad left the family when he was still young.
Kurt clung to the dream of becoming an NFL player and going to the Super Bowl.
And, he had to mature enough to be the team player he needed to be if he was going to become a professional player.

Overall, I enjoyed the film.
Zachary Levi did a convincing job of portraying Kurt Warner with his struggles to get where he dreamt he would be. You can see how he grows as a person from his time in college, his early years with Brenda and her two children, as well as his eventual journey into the NFL when he was older than most rookies.
Sprinkled throughout the film is the importance of family and faith.
Of how Kurt openly embraced Brenda’s children.
And how he ultimately recognized God as the one who allowed for blessings in his life including the Super Bowl win.
Something I liked about this film is how they integrated footage of past games into the film. You might see Levi for close-ups, but some of the footage shows Kurt Warner in action. Plus, you can see how the crowd was feeling for different events.
Along those lines, you’ll get to see the real Kurt and Brenda along with their children at the closing credits.
So if you enjoy movies about real people, especially with sports as a key component of their lives, then make time to go see American Underdog.
