Using Essential Oils with Your Family

I have been, or can be if you click on a link and make a purchase, compensated via a cash payment, gift, or something else of value for writing this post. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.

For the past few years, I have been using essential oils in the home. Yet, I somehow have not taken the time to share about it here. So, I thought I’d take a few minutes to share about using essential oils with your family.

Basics of Essential Oils

If you are like me, your Facebook feed may have plenty of posts by people who have added essential oil use to their homes. But, seeing that someone uses something and knowing more about it are 2 different things.

Here’s a bit more about essential oils and how I go about using them in the home thus far. Keep in mind that I am continually learning!

What Are Essential Oils?

Essential oils are oils that are extracted from parts of flowers, plants, and trees.

The oils come from the flower petals, bark, leaves, seeds, roots, and fruits.

Even a single drop of oil from these parts of a plant or tree can have drastic positive impacts on mental and physical ailments.

The way they are extracted is usually by steaming the plant to separate the oil from water, which is a type of distillation process.

They are highly concentrated and too strong for direct contact on your skin. The solution is dilution!

There is a wide variety of essential oils available on the marketplace.

Reasons for Using Essential Oils

These powerhouses from nature have so many uses. This is just an overview of why people are using essential oils.

Essential oils are used as a natural or holistic remedy for various ailments. In the ‘oily’ community, there is a running joke that “there’s an oil for that!” when asked about

While they are not meant to replace medical treatment, they can help complement and help with everything from migraines to skin conditions.

Here is a short list of the many ways essential oils can help you:

  • Insomnia
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Joint aches and pains
  • Chronic pain
  • Menstrual irregularities
  • Cups, scrapes and burns
  • Signs of aging and wrinkles
  • Anxiety, stress, and depression

Essential oils are also great for cleaning your home without the use of toxic chemicals.

You still need to observe safety protocols as they are potent. Use containers to premix your cleaning ‘solution’ with essential oils and properly label for what is in them and how to use it.

So while it is a better choice for many families, you should supervise the kids if they are using the products to clean.

Storing Your Essential Oils

My basic approach is two-fold.

First, I store my oils in the bottles they came in. The glass is typically dark to prevent sunlight from acting on the essential oil. When I make up roller bottles of prediluted essential oils or blends, I use containers purchased which are dark (often brown or green.)

Secondly, you want to keep them out of direct light and in a cool, dry environment.  If there are young children in the house, you want that place to be out of reach or behind locked doors.

Since my boys are older, I have a dedicated drawer in my nightstand.

Methods for Using Essential Oils

If you have spent any time with someone who is actively using essential oils, you may have heard them mention three ways to use them. Specifically, you can practice aromatherapy (inhalation), apply it to your skin (topical) or ingest the oils.

There are some who actively promote particular methods while calling others, particularly ingestion, dangerous.  (Scroll down for more information on a resource that covers that hot topic.)

In my home, I practice both aromatherapy and topical applications.

Aromatherapy can be as simple as opening a bottle and sniffing the cap or involve the use of a diffuser.

As I mentioned, essential oils are super concentrated and quite potent. When I do a topical application, I almost always dilute the oil in a carrier oil.

Discussion of application is such a meaty topic that I’ll save it for another post.
