Merging Christian faith with a suspense novel can be a tricky thing to do. Too much talk of faith can easily seem almost forced upon the story while some good suspense novels leave little room for faith to enter the equation. Erin Healy has managed to merge both into a wonderful tale titled The Baker’s Wife.
In this novel, you find a small community in Californian valley where 2 families seem to be at odds. Central for all that happens is the character of Audrey, a former pastor’s wife and now the baker’s wife.
Audrey has a gift which sometimes seems to be a curse. She is led by God to those in need where she can minister and sometimes even bear their pain. But, after a very trying time sitting vigil at a dying church member’s home, Audrey withdraws from the path God had been leading her. And that action of turning away leads to consequences she had not imagined.
Months later her husband is no longer pastor, but the local baker. Her son’s dreams of college are ruined and life is about to enter a roller coaster ride as her car collides with a local school teacher’s motorcycle. Tons of blood is at the scene, but no one can find a body. And, the presumed victim is the wife of a lead detective with the police force and the deacon who led the movement to have her husband relieved of pastoral duties who is now missing.
Along with the journey Aubrey’s family must make are a former convict who’s returned to town seeking to right a wrong done many years prior and a troubled teen, the daughter of the missing woman.
The book takes you for a few twists and turns before ultimately having several of the characters finding forgiveness and peace. I found it to be an enjoyable read that left me longing for more.
