TOS Crew Review – Mathematical Reasoning Level A
I have been, or can be if you click on a link and make a purchase, compensated via a cash payment, gift, or something else of value for writing this post. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.
Our family was blessed with the opportunity to review another product from The Critical Thinking Co., Mathematical Reasoning Level A. D was excited to have his own product to review since many of the others we have been sent were for his older brothers.
Mathematical Reasoning Level A is part of their core curriculum line, which means it covers all the topics you need for that grade level based on standards. This large book is in a bright, colorful format that will appeal to most students. Our usual math program is a more plain approach with just black type on white paper. While the boys do fine with that, I find they do enjoy seeing all the colorful pictures at times.
The book does have a definite spiral approach so that each new skill is revisited again and again as your work your way through the book. For most kids, this is a great approach to take as it reinforces what they have learned as they go. For D, we found that some pages had to be skipped as he commented about the repetition. I’ll just say that he’s got a quick mind for math and that is most likely the reason for his dislike of doing similar problems multiple times. He is more eager to learn something new than to keep revisiting the same problems. But, with patient presentation by me and a little judgement of what we can easily skip over, he has thoroughly enjoyed working through this math book.
After a month of using it, he is almost half way through. This is NOT a short book as it has 250 pages in it. However, given that some of the beginning was truly a review of things he already knew, I am not surprised that he would be able to speed through many of the pages. Some days he was working away and didn’t stop until he had finished 20 pages!
Unlike many of the products from Critical Thinking, Mathematical Reasoning Level A is NOT reproducible. The cost per book is $32.99, not including shipping. So, compared to some math curriculum choices out there it is on the pricier side. However, I can not argue that the final product appears quite durable and can hold a child’s interest. And, if you decide to order other products at the same time, you might find a bundle that brings the individual book price down some. This particular book is in the K-1 bundle which offers a 20% discount off the individual book prices and gives you a lot of materials to educate your child with a focus on critical thinking skills.
