Do you enjoy watching a film that inspires or motivates you?  While I enjoy the entertainment factor, I find some of my favorite movies are ones that had me digging a little into myself and considering ways to be a better person. 23 Blast is one of those types of movies which I recently received to review that not only leaves you feeling good, but considering how you can strive to be better.

23 Blast An Inspirational Family Film About Overcoming Obstacles

About 23 Blast

As a typical teenager, Travis Freeman (Mark Hapka) is a local hero both on and off the high-school football field in his small Kentucky town, but in 1997, Travis contracts an infection that destroys his optic nerve and renders him blind overnight.

Travis At the Party Before His Life Changes

With the loving help and concern of his parents, physical therapist, coach and best friend, Travis demonstrates what true bravery is: He continues to compete on the gridiron and helps his team advance to the state finals.

My Thoughts on 23 Blast

If you do not like movies that have a sports theme in them, then you might not like this story either.  However, in many ways this particular film has more focus on an individual’s journey with football being a constant in their lives rather than a film which is more focused on the team.
I did enjoy the movie overall and found that some of my boys (who often run out the door now if they think a ‘religious’ film is being viewed) hung around to see what happened. The movie is based on Travis Freeman’s life and does include actual photos and footage at the end. However, the timing of the unfortunate infection which took is sight is different as the real story happened when he was 12 and not in high school. Either way, seeing him accept his new limitations and then find a way to do something he loved is inspiring.
This film received a PG-13 rating, but I had no problems letting my 5 year old watch.  Supposedly, the rating was given because of scenes with drinking of alcohol (once on school property and once at a party.)  There really wasn’t anything else questionable which has it even approaching many films with that rating.

  1. My husband absolutely loves football and this looks like an inspirational story. Am looking forward to watching it!! I would keep it to watch, but probably have friends over to watch it.

  2. The struggle of being young, having your visual sight and enjoying activities that rely on that sight, then suddenly losing that sight and learning to overcome that would be a wonderful movie.

  3. This movie interests me as it sounds like a great family friendly movie that has an inspirational message. I would keep this movie to watch with my family.

  4. I’d watch the movie at home with my family and then give the copy to our most valuable friends and ask them to watch the movie with their family and friends. Then, do the same. Pass it on and share the message!
