I shared in an earlier 40 Days of Seeking Him post that after 2 kids had been down for the count with a fever our family decided to unplug and head out to enjoy God’s Creation as a family. In some ways this seems so fitting for the season of Lent as we seek to grow closer to Christ.
For our adventure, we drove out to the Eagle River Nature Center. It had been over a year since we’d last been there as road construction had us avoiding it last summer. I’ve shared some photos from there in the past (Exploring the Eagle River Valley and Birthday Celebration for Collective Bias)
Knowing that the trail conditions would most likely be a bit icy, the adults wore ice grippers. I must admit that wearing them made me enjoy the hike a lot more than in times past when footing was uncertain.
The mountain views are wonderful just outside of the actual center building.
Part way down the trail, you will find a marker about this being part of the Iditarod Trail. My husband and eldest son made the trek across Crow Pass 2 years ago and plan to do it again this summer, weather and schedules permitting.
Otherwise, we just enjoyed the hike which included stops at some natural ‘playscapes’.
Everyone had a wonderful few hours taking in the fresh air and enjoying each other’s company. The boys are eager to head back out to the same area soon with an earlier start so we might get a little further down the trail. (We only did about 1.5 miles each way.)
Do you take time on a regular basis to unplug and just enjoy the world around you?
What’s a favorite location for spending time outdoors as a family?
