Traveling the World Through Books and Food

As much as we enjoy traveling, the reality is that we can not afford (either time or financial resources) to go everywhere we’d like to go.

Thankfully, my family has discovered that we can travel the world through books and food with no need to leave home.

And, where do we go to find those books and recipes?
The library!

Traveling the World Through Books for Young Children

Our family was blessed with the opportunity to review 4 titles from the series “If You Were Me and Lived…Series” by Away We Go Media.

You and your child can learn a bit about life in each of the countries featured for a child.

I love that it provides a glimpse into another country through the life of a child.

My boys really enjoyed seeing both the similarities and differences.

Traveling the World Through Books for Tweens and Teens

A classic title for this age range is Around the World in 80 Days by Jules Verne.

Your kids can travel alongside Phileas Fogg and his faithful servant, Passepartout, who are circumnavigating the globe on a bet.  During their travels, the reader gets to ‘see’ the different sites of the World as they would have been in the late 1800s.

Best of all…there is an edition available for FREE on Kindle. (And, once you purchase the free Kindle book you are given the option to buy the audiobook at the discounted rate of $2.99)

Taking Your Travels to the Next Step

As much fun as it can be to read a book and learn more about other parts of the world, it is putting that knowledge into some action that makes it fun.

Our family loves to sample dishes from other cultures.

Sometimes that means picking up some takeout at an ethnic restaurant or the freezer section of the grocery store.  And, other times we try our hand at making a dish in the kitchen.

When we lived in Alaska, we were blessed to be invited to a Chinese New Year where the boys had the opportunity to sample a variety of authentic dishes.

The host family has 2 members from China who made all of the food. Some of the dishes were mild and some were spicy.

The Kung Pao chicken was so spicy that those of us nearest the kitchen were coughing and tearing up as it was being cooked.

All in all, it was a great way to sample a different culture outside of a book or video.

What are some of your favorite books to learn about the world?
Does your family enjoy trying dishes from different locales? Do you have any favorites?

  1. I have always felt that reading a good book was like taking a vacation. Pairing food with books is a fantastic way to experience the world without leaving your house.

I think I am going to start looking for cultural celebrations in my area and planning books to read before and after so my kids can really experience life from another perspective.

Thank you for helping to bring a spoonful of reading fun to the Poppins Book Nook this month!
